The culinary lights of Chelsea will be a little less bright tonight as the Bright Food Shop and Market locks its doors for the final time. Dona Abramson and Stuart Tarabour and their wonderfully quirky restaurant and Hispanic market are the latest victims of skyrocketing rents in Chelsea. My condolences go out to those of you who never enjoyed their catfish tacos with asian slaw and the TO DIE FOR cheese cake. We will miss you guys.

After six years of dining at Bright Food, my conscience will not allow me to return. Continually watching and overhearing the aggressive bearded gentleman (co-owner?) berate his employees during lunch has left a sour taste in my mouth for which the moderately interesting food (for the price) can no longer compensate. If you do go (bearing in mind into whose pocket your money inevitably winds up), go in the evening when the candles are lit, the cooks are relaxed and the waitstaff laughs, forgetting about the help ads they clandestinely searched throughout the day.

Perfect place for weekend brunch in Chelsea before heading over to Greenmarket: varied/innovative choices, good prices, no attitude. The corn pancakes are fantastic. Be specific about your eggs and hope for the best.

Bright it is, the food I mean. A delicious Green Chili Posole accompanied by a hearty wedge of cornbread was enough to make me go back (I went for the added turkey chorizo option but you know what, it doesn't need it), the breakfast burrito was just as yummy. The margaritas are good too, not too sweet, not too tart. An interesting menu, the decor isn't much but so what!

While all food items are very well prepared here, the cornmeal pecan pancakes served at breakfast are superb. I also love their eggs rancheros-style, better than competing versions from other straight-up mex joints. Salads are well done, and the bread basket is recommended. Wash it all down with a Blenheim's Ginger Ale for some real snap! I haven't gone wrong here yet.
