I love sushi and this place delivers along with its Robata skewers of various meats and vegis. The sushi/sashimi is very fresh, but where this place shines is at lunch with their Bento boxes full of goodies, all under 20 bucks. You also get free drinks (non-alcoholic) with your meal ( Miso soup, salad, robata, maki) If you like sushi and want something new from Japan, Butai is the only Robata restaurant in NYC. The inside seems small, but thats only the front. The place boast an upstairs as well as a back dining room. The music is typical of a real Japanese joint (strange music) but it isnt over bearing and doesnt ruin the experience. Check it out.

Walking by, I had a sense that it was a trendy rather than authentic Japanese dining experience. But, I was wrong. The setting is elegant and the food is great. It's a bit pricy, but you have to do what the Japanese do and share a bunch of tasting plates rather than order an individual meal. Try something you've never had and the adventure will be worth it.
