Start to finish, excellent. From the butter for the bread (wonderful, light, flavorful) to the liver amuse, to my heirloom beet salad and ravioli in parmesan broth. Sublime. To top it off 3 light and lovely raspberry beignets with a light vanilla dipping sauce. Great service. Very satisfied.

Based on my enjoyment of seeing Alex Guarnaschelli on tv numerous times (the high profile and discerning owner) I was eager to try the restaurant, knowing her high standards. The results were a little disappointing. After seeing beautiful photos of the dramatic high ceiling dining room, we were unfortunately seated downstairs to their secondary dining area which looks like a casual tikki lounge. No matter. My appetizer was quite good (grilled octopus) but the entree (Rack of Lamb) was two small/medium leg pieces of lamb, with so much fat around the edges that the middle turned out to be just a few measly bites, equivalent to an appetizer. I actually left there hungry!! After finishing our meal downstairs we returned upstairs to discover the cavernous room makes table conversation almost impossible because of the noise. Glad we ate downstairs.

I recently had dinner at Butter. I had made an 8 PM reservation, for which my party of 6 arrived early. We were told that we would need to wait 15 minutes for our table, which is already a strike in my book. When we inquired after 15 minutes about our table, the maitre de replied that it would be another 10 minutes. My friend gently reminded him that we had been told 15 minutes already, to which he rudely replied, "well, I guess I was wrong then." The first 30 minutes being at Butter should have been an indicator as to how our overall experience would be. The waiter was very sweet, but, did not bring our dessert course for 45 minutes because he thought we were waiting for our entrees. We ended up being at the restaurant for about 3 hours. I would say that in general, it was an unpleasant experience. The soundtrack was awful and reminiscent of the playlist at a bar mitzvah. Mind you, we are 20 somethings who enjoy loud, fun music. The food was certainly nothing special that would entice me to return and mitigate the downright miserable atmosphere at the place.

I went here with a friend during the week and took advantage of the restaurant week special. They served a great shrimp app, short ribs and rice pudding. The restaurant has two levels: upstairs with more lighting and space, and downstairs which is smaller but more intimate. The clientele was impressive and I did happen to notice secret service at the bar. The bartender was quite friendly upstairs and while I was waiting for my friend he shared stories and life experiences. Overall, if you're going on a date try to get seated downstairs for more intimacy. If you're going with a group of people try to get upstairs seating.

Looking to dazzle some friends from the UK we headed to Butter. It began with mediocre appetizers; my partner’s looking and tasting like some salt saturated chef Boyardee kids meal. An hour and three bottles of wine later our entrees still hadn't arrived and the only excuse any of the staff could muster was "apologies, there is a large party upstairs tonight." Too bad for us we weren't invited which meant we had to suffer through shoddy service and ... NO FOOD. To the horror of the restaurant manager we kindly paid for the little food we had been served and waltzed out of the restaurant. We went to Peasant – I highly recommend it.

I've been to Butter twice in the past 10 days -- once at lunch then, again, for dinner. The menu was inspired. Flavors were clean, simple yet assertive. Food was consistently stellar. The staff was abundantly attentive. Definitely underrated IMO but that's good for me as I intend to keep returning.

Decided to go to Butter w/friends for Restaurant Week. The Charcuterie Plate appetizer was nothing special, wouldn't order again. For my main, I ordered short ribs: INCREDIBLE. My dish smell AMAZING, was perfectly cooked and beautifully paired with carrots & greens. I was disappointed that dessert advertised online wasn't available (carrot cake), but settled instead on dark choc cake with vanilla ice cream. Cake was tasty, but should have been served warm. Only got a thimbleful of ice cream, which didn't matter cause it was bland. Also tried raspberry beignets with vanilla bean sauce -- VERY good. Not sure if it was because we ordered off the RW menu, but the waiter disappeared as soon as food came out. Never checked in on us -- even to ask if we wanted to order a second bottle of wine. Eventually my friend flagged him down to request coffee (before dessert arrived), but it didn't come until 10 min after our dessert plates were cleared! I expected better/decent service.

I know this restaurant does not get rave reviews from critics like some other NYC restaurants, but in my opinion, it deserves to be mentioned alongside some of the great ones. The building itself is amazing with very intriguing interior design. The hostess and server were so very nice and down to earth. The gnocchi and mussels appetizer was great. The duck confit entree is probably the best thing I have ever eaten--soft duck leg meat with a crispy skin, over a bed of lentils topped with slivers of apple and fried brussels sprout leaves. The coconut tart dessert was also pretty good. My only complaints are that the wine by the glass was a little pricy for not being special and that the service dropped a little as the restaurant got busier. In order to combat the service complaints, try to get there before 6:30pm and you'll probably have the same great experience I had.

A waiter provided the worst service I've ever had last night. He made no effort to hide the fact that he was disgusted by the fact that my friends and I were at Butter for Restaurant week, he barely deigned to look us in the eyes when were ordering off the restaurant week menu, and then the final straw came when he made mistake, bringing us a bottle of wine costing TWICE the amount of the one that we ordered. He attempted to charge us for both on our check, and when we asked him to take the bottle off that we had ordered but not received, he actually got defensive! It was outrageous and as a waitress myself, I think it's a despicable to treat people. And, of course, to add insult to injury, despite the fact that we did not WANT to leave a 20% tip, one is automatically added to your tab, regardless of table size. The fact that there is no incentive to be nice to your customers was clearly reflected in our waiter's attitude last night.

We wanted to go to Butter because we'd heard so much of it, so when we called at 7:30 on a Saturday night to get a reservation for 9:30 pm, we were surprised to find that Butter had availability. However, we were kept waiting for nearly 45 minutes to be seated, yet we were then given complimentary glasses of champagne to make up for it. Once seated the service was great, our food came quickly, and everything was delicious.
