My companion enjoyed the food at Ca Va on a wet rainy night in early November. The mussels were the freshest I have tasted in this city. The slow cooked short ribs hit the spot on that miserable night. Initially the serving looks too small for my appetite but the portion was more than enough food. The root vegetables on the side made a terrific accompaniment. My companion's duck was worthy of stealing out from under him. The skin was crisp and the meat very tender. We fought over the dessert, the chocolate tart. I was surprised by the salted caramel ice cream. It was tastier than expected. The service was a bit inexperienced but got points for trying very hard.

One of the worst dining experiences we've had in New York. The service was rushed and rude, the food mediocre at best (the monkfish I was served was dry, tough and almost inedible), the waitstaff uninformed and uninformative about the cusine. The decor is wonderful, but this is clearly another attempt by an "uber-chef" to capitalize on his name and former reputation. This is a place to be avoided at all costs. The wonderful chef Todd English has become yet another culinary prostitute. Shame on you.....

We were a part of 12 last night at Ca Va and many of us were completely disappointed with our meal. The ambience and decor were just fine, and the food looked great, but tasted bland, dry or just awful. I had last night's special - the short rib, which was so incredibly dry, I could barely stand eating it. In fact, another member of our party left his on the plate. There was the smallest dribble of sauce/glaze on the plate, the did not add to the moisture. My husband had the halibut which he said was bland and also dry. The sauce for his had no flavor whatsoever. He also had the octopus appetizer, which I sampled, and we both agreed that the octopus we had only 4 days earlier at Stamatis in Astoria was much more tender, and much more flavorful. Thoroughly disappointing. Never going back.

I don't know what other reviewers are talking about. The food is sublime and beautifully presented and the service was very good. The room is very attractive, if somewhat in a monotone palette and a tad too informal for the caliber restaurant it aims to be, but it certainly doesn't detract from the experience at all. My dining partner and I are New Yorkers and avid "foodies" and we were both extremely pleased.

I should have left after I noticed that the felt on the booth has worn away, making it look like a Midwestern truck stop diner. The food was disgusting and the waiter forgot part of our order--though in retrospect, that probably saved us from another bad dish.
