Charming, Fine Cuban Cuisine (No longer BYOB)

It should be noted that this restaurant is no longer BYOB, and I think, that does take away from it's value overall. The decor, though is quite charming (certainly it's strongest point) and the food is good, not spectacular, but good. Prices for entrees range from the upper teens to the mid-to-higher twenties which may be a bit pricey for what it's worth, but not outlandish. The service is only OK: if you attempt to linger, you will surely be pressured to wrap up. While my visits have certainly been less frequent, it's still a place that I enjoy. Great for dates!

Surprised to hear that anyone has had a positive experience with the owner of this place. Went here last night and had reservations for a going away party. As soon as we got there, the owner started yelling at us about being late. After being seated, we asked about uncorking wine because we thought it was BYOB. The owner started rudely arguing with us about about the fact that on their website it had talked about an uncorking fee. " I'm the owner, and I know what's on my website!" Regardless of the website, the owner was extremely rude to her customers. She seemed to have an attitude that she was doing us a HUGE favor by allowing us to eat at her restaurant, as opposed to being grateful for business. We left before even eating, so I don't know what the food is like. We all decided we didn't want to celebrate a special occasion here. I've been in New York for a while, and have never encountered a ruder owner. Would NEVER go back to this place and NEVER suggest it.

Great food marred by bad service

While this is probably the best Cuban food in the city, my experience was tainted by what I was told on the phone regarding BYOB and what was charged on the bill. The woman running the show cared more about making an extra 60 bucks than keeping my business, and sadly I will never return again. A shame, the food really is good, but these people need to learn how to better service their clientele.

Met up with a group of 5 girls as they finished their meal for a quick drink before heading elsewhere. Seemed nice enough, I tried bites of a couple friends' dishes, and the space was very cozy... but as we were saying goodbye to 4 friends who were leaving early, they cleared the whole table including a remaining half bottle of wine we'd intended to drink. At 10 p.m. clearly not with anyone waiting. When we asked why they'd cleared early and what happened to our wine, the hostess began to pull empty bottles (NOT our bottle) out of the garbage as "proof", then called us liars, then drunks, then bitches, and then she and her husband told us to leave before they called the police. Don't know what she could have told them about two girls who'd had two glasses, and half a glass, of wine, respectively. I've never been treated this poorly by a restaurant, never been angry enough to post a subsequently negative review, and never been so vehement in my opinion that this place is NOT worth wasting an evening.

Good food, Deplorable Service

Granted, the quality of the dishes, including their presentation, is a bit above average here, and the decor is quite charming, as well. However, neither is enough to outweigh the downright DEPLORABLE service. We had a large group who had made reservations more than a week in advance for a Saturday night dinner. The hostess was incredibly rude to members of our party who arrived early, and when it was finally revealed that she had mistakingly cancelled our reservation, no apologies were handed out. Instead, she accused us of canceling the reservation ourselves and seemed annoyed that we had shown up at all. Needless to say, we did not wish to give our business to them, but given that it was a BYO and we had come with bottles of wine, we agreed to wait around for 30 minutes and have our group sit at separate tables. The coup-de-grace was discovering the $10 corkage fee per bottle at the end of our meal. Moral of the story: Look elsewhere.

Let me begin by saying this restaurant featured some of the best food I've ever tasted. My red snapper fried in plantain something or other was so good I could hardly put in my mouth without ranting about how delicious it was. Needless to say, crumbs were everywhere. However, things were far from perfect. The place lacks a liquor license, so about everyone in our around 15 person party brought a bottle of wine...we were celebrating something--what exactly is not important. What is important is that at the end of the meal we were hit with the heretofore unmentioned 15 dollar per bottle uncorking fee...to the tune of 110 dollars. And, i have to say, new york mag, you're a little off, with your single dollar sign rating for this place. We paid double what was listed...per person. This is great place...give it some respect, and fix your listing.

Cafe Cortadito is by far one of my favorite restaurants in NYC. I've reserved tables for my birthday, my roommate's, and various friends' parties. They have great food, low prices, and you can't beat BYOB. I did go there one night for dinner with 2 other people, with a reservation, and had to wait about 20 min outside...also, the service is not as great as it was before. However, it WAS a busy Friday night, so I almost take those conditions to be standard given the timing. So Cafe Cortadito is still at the top of my list, but I might just wait for a weeknight before I go back.

Went with 2 friends at 6 pm. No other customers. They insisted on sitting us at a tiny table for 2 right by the door. When we asked to join another small table or move us, they told us that soon their "clients' would be arriving. We obviously were not the chosen in Cafe Cortadito. We ate an entire meal crowded and uncomfortable, and we will never go back, in spite of decent food.
