Exceptional food and service in an unpretentious setting makes this a real find. Try a bottle of Belgium Beer (my favorite is Delirium Tremors) to start off the meal. The evening specials, soft shell crab and roasted duck, were scrumptiously prepared and came with a tricolor assortment of vegetables. The customary pommes frites were crispy and delicious in the mustard/mayonnaise sauce. We barely had room for the Belgian chocolate cake. When the check came, I was pleasantly surprised, as it was well below what I expected for Manhattan.

Striped Bass was the special so I had to have it. I was not disappointed, it was delicious. The host is a colorful character named Francis who prowls the dining room from time to time quickly engaging and dis-engaging with the clientele. The wines by the glass assortment is awkward because only the varietal or region (primarily French, of course) are named on the listing, not the producer. I tried the glasses named "Pinot Noir-Burgundy" and one named "Pouilly-Fume-Loire Valley" and enjoyed both. Not world beaters, but very good. I'd go again, if only to get some more French Fries!

The mussels and the fries accompanied by the Belgian beers are awesome, however, the entrees are mediocre and average at best. Although I have returned to this restaurant 5 times, I will not be returning due to the owner who was extremely rude. Only 5 minutes after paying the bill, the owner personally asked us to leave for he had other customers to seat. I have never been asked to leave a restaurant in this manner and felt that it was extremely impolite. So, I guess if you are planning to come here, do not plan on enjoying your mussels and fries with conversation, be prepared to eat and leave.

We have had many dinners at Bruxelles, all delicious and all different. The ambience is quaint and inviting, the service attentive and friendly, and the food is delicious. When we have had no time to waste, we've just gone for pommes frites and a beer....and although that is so counter to anything we would usually do...it is just perfect. It is equally welcoming to couples on dates as to families and tourists. It is elegant and homey....and reasonably priced. It is definitely among my favorite restaurants in the Village.

Would you hate me if I said I've had better mussels in the city? Having said that they were pretty good at this place. I would go back, and anyone who's wondering if they should go, you should try it, most won't be disappointed.

Was very disappointed by this Belgian restaurant. The mussles came in a flat glass casserole dish (not in a pot as it should), we were supposed to get fries and one order never came, drinks took forever, and the place was very cramped. Although the food taste was okay, would never go back!

Went here for a bridal shower a few years ago - much to the grumbling of family (no ketchup with fries - they didn't approve). I went back a couple years ago to give it a second try. And now with my more advanced palette can I truly appreciate what is Cafe de Bruxelles. Amazing food, french/belgium service (which I prefer) and a wonderful spot to enjoy a glass of wine and people watch from the back room by the bar. I will continue to go here until the day I die.
-Salads and fries are staples; daily soup always a hit, cotes de rome wine *kiss* ah, yes, the ever perfect hare, as well.
-never have seen kids there - a major plus
-Cons - pricey, but I'm willing to pay.

Mussels under all Names, Same Taste

Nice, cosy atmosphere with a little cramped seating. The main reason for being here, i.e., mussels, all come in motorcycle helmet size bowls and some even invade the soup du jour. Waiting staff are kind and unobtrusive.
Although each mussel "dish" came with fries, we(company of 2) ended up not getting a second serving of fries, which is unheard of in Belgium. The mussels themselves had toned-down taste, with enormous quantities. However, I am proud to say that we each finished our bowls.
Needless to say, the beer is excellent. However, overall, the place mysteriously fails to excel in any of the qualities above.

Having lived in Brussels for 2 years, we thoroughly enjoy a dinner at Cafe Bruxelles whenever we visit Manhattan. It has the same feel as restaurants we frequented while living there and we really enjoy the food and great Belgian beer. The frites are excellent.

Never been to Belgium, so I don't really know what it is like there, but this place certainly evokes memories from a 'collective consciousness.' It's got only mediocre service, but the food and beer are wonderful....especially the pom frites. I'd probably avoid it if you dislike seafood since mussels are the specialty. Otherwise, they are prepared in a dozen appetizing ways. It is an unpretentious way to spend a weekend night with some really great friends.
