Our family was very sad to see this resturant close. We always looked forward to visiting during our trips to New York. I had the pleasure of meeting the owners and always felt comfortable and special. New York will never be the same. DWB - San Antonio Texas

It is everything they say it is: traditional UWS, nice décor, stuffy--most people there are over 60...I would rather go with my grandfather than a date. The food was ok, nothing special, the service was so so but what really shocked me was the piece of rubber kitchen glove I found myself chewing while finishing my dessert. It was disgusting...vile...but what was worse was the restaurant's response. A brief apology, dessert on the house, and speedy delivery of the check in which we were barely compensated (at least we were finally able to get our waiter's attention). Overall, I understand mistakes happen, but their attitude was so horrid I would rather eat McDonald's than return here.

I love the Cafe des Artistes. I discovered it a couple of years ago, and it is one of the few places in New York that does not feel like that cookie cutter nouveau riche kind of place. The food is amazing, the chef was on Top Chef this season. My favorite dish is the Pot au Feu. Sometimes I go late at night and have a calvados in the Parlor, a little room just next door with a zinc bar right out of Paris. I always take out of towners here because it is the kind of place you cannot find anywhere else.

Took a client here for a dinner and got possibly the worst service I've had in Manhattan. Both of us were very well-dressed and accustomed to high caliber restaurants both in the US and abroad (he's French). Perhaps it was because we were under the age of 40. Regardless, the restaurant was only about 40% full and there was plenty of waitstaff on hand. The behavior of both the host and the waiter was offensive, rude and dismissive -- we were so offended and upset, we were unable to finish our meals. A letter written to management to this effect was ignored. Saving grace: it was on an expense account. On a sidebar, as a potential romantic dinner locale, the decor's stuffiness borders on cloying. It's pretty, but not relaxing enough for romance.

There is nothing more wonderful on a Sunday morning (be sure to get there around 12 noon since NY state still has out-dated laws about serving alcohol before noon on Sunday--good God I'm from Texas and we can get a Bloody Mary at 10AM on Sunday). The food is good, not fabulous, but the setting, the history, the service has no peer in Manhattan. They serve the best Bloody Mary's in town. The ideal routine here is a wonderful Sunday brunch, a walk downtown and a matinee--tha's what New York is all about.

Went here w/my dad and his business partner--I suggested it not knowing what it would be like. It was alot of elderly couples and had the feel of stuffy, rich old people. The food was good--we had a lot of seafood. Overall pleasant, but nothing spectacular--very quiet and low-key.
