There's a scene at Cafe Deville - especially in the summer when the bistro tables outside get packed. But it is a bar scene. The food - which used to be good - has become awful. In particular the brunch is so substandard as to be laughable. Suitable only for extremely hung over NYU students or tourists who are lost. I live in the neighborhood and, every once in a while, I would try to give the place another chance but no more. The only thing to go for is drinks.

I live one block away from Cafe Deville. This place is one of my favorite after-work hangout, especially when the weather is nice and the terrace is open. I would not call this bar/restaurant a hip place. Don't expect a trendy and beatiful crowd as this is more of a local place. The best thing at Cafe Deville is the happy hour with $1 blue point oyster. They are so good! Get a dozen with a glass of the house white and you will be happy. BUT keep in mind: the food at cafe Deville is average at best. The escargot are served in an oily pastry (even the French that I am could not eat it!), the french onion soup is watery, the pate is industrial, and the mains are simply not good. Conclusion: go there for a drink, when the weather is nice and enjoy the oyster special. One last thing: the waitresses at Deville are usually quite charming but with the brain power and the speed of an escargot. Don't be in a rush!

I quite literally stumbled onto Cafe Deville (or the sidewalk, if you will) and noticed the happy hour special consisting of $1 oysters and wine specials. It was cold and windy, they offered lamplit seating outside. It was simple and charming...I paid more for my dry-cleaning bill that day.
