The little New American cafĂ© that could. And can. And does.

The other night I had a grilled sturgeon with lemon-infused white beans that was robustly delightful, one of the best pieces of fish I've ever eaten. The chipotle sauce to the side was too much, sparky and zingyzangy but overpowering to the clean meaty depth of the fish and the delicate lemonwhite. But that's the fun of Ghia. They're experimenting. They're trying clever twists. And even when there's a slight misfire, they're better than any neighborhood cafĂ© has any right to be. Ghia gets the new Bushwick way-of-eating. The familiar corner-cafĂ© that's easy to step into, then gives you higher-quality food and interesting drinks but without the scene-stress of Williamsburg. Produce -- as I gather -- often from the community garden across the street. Easy-going, entertaining conversation at the bar. And an attention to flavor and freshness and provenance that's become a hallmark of Brooklyn's next-generation eateries. The new brunch drink at this end of Brooklyn is the Michelada. There's something of a competition on -- everyone's giving their own spin on it. I reckon Ghia does it best, with a home-brewed hot sauce pressed right from the veggies grown across the street. And it's all done with an easygoing nature and a friendly, casual yet finely-tuned choreography that's missed all too often elsewhere. What can I say? It's a gem, and I can't help saying that even though it means I'll never get a table the next time I stop by.
