Café Gray was originally a wonderful addition to the Manhattan dinning scene when it arrived at the Warner Center on Columbus Circle. It has always had a dinning room that is a bit weird. With all that beautiful windowed area looking at Central Park, the dinning room faces the open kitchen that itself has an obstructed view through the windows to Central Park. The dinning space is lively, in fact noisey. The service is overly professional (i.e. very bureacratic with a head waiter, a waiter a wine service person, various bus boys, etc.). All this for a Cafe. The food had been the strength and continues to be the best part of the experience. The food preparation is very good but does not cross the threshold into spectacular. Perhaps the kitchen is already bored, or there are too many hands making the dishes, and the performance is slightly off.

Just they way I like it - great food, attentive service but no stuffy attitude. The room has a real energy to it and there were quite a few bold face names sitting around us (that was impressive to my out of town clients). Great wine list, if you are willing to take some chances there are some interesting values there.
Kudos to Chef Kunz and his very professional staff!

My fifth trip back and I enjoyed it even more than the first time. Food, as always, was amazing but the service has improved dramatically and you can tell that they have worked all those opening year kinks as things seem to
be very well orchestrated.
There was not a free seat in the house tonight, a Monday, but everything was flawless. This is one restaurant that seems to get "hotter" with age -don't be scared by the negative remarks in older reviews on service. They have a new team there and it is very smooth. The bar menu is fantastic too, I will be back to try that. The Chocolate Rum Toast is my new favorite dessert!

I was there last saturday and we had a great table overlooking the kitchen. the kitchen itself is a scene. Watching the detail attention given to food preparation is breathtaking. Our food was delicious and desert was perfect. Our waiter was very helpfull and knowledgable of the menu. Take my advice go there and you will love it.

Never have I seen such inept service as I had experienced at Cafe Gray. Over two hours for Two Courses! Wine poured into water glasses! Entrees arriving tepid. The kitchen might have potential, based on the excellent sauces that came with our appetizers and entrees, but the wait staff and management have no idea how to run a restaurant. Perhaps Cafe Gray should open at 8pm? Or perhaps the staff and managment should dine at Cafe Boulud and learn a thing or two. Never again.

When my husband and I visited NYC for the holidays, we looked forward to a dinner at Cafe Gray. The staff at the door was very friendly but the service stopped there. We ordered our appetizers and dinner and asked for the wine list. It never appeared. Even though there were many wait people wandering no one seemed to care if we ordered a bottle of wine or not. The dinners and appetizers were both delicious. The same thing happened when we ordered our desert and coffee. We had to ask for the coffee a second time. We won't be back.

I went to Cafe Gray with my sister and I have to say that we had a wonderful time. From the risotto to the chocolate souffle that concluded our dinner, every single dish was rich in flavor (Kunz's signature)and absolutely succulent. I recommend this restaurant without reservation (no pun intended) even if some people would have preferred to have an unobstructed view of the Park. To that I say, the food is so good, your eyes won't leave your plate anyway!

It wasn't horrible - just not memorable. I ate there less than a week ago and I already can't remember what I ate, other than it was a fish dish and it was just okay. I also can't even remember what I had for dessert, other than, again, it was just okay. The service, however, was excellent and quite attentive and the Austrian wine we ordered excellent. The room left me cold -I'm not really interested in looking at the kitchen and we were seated right in front of it. Given the excellent dining choices in NYC, I wouldn't rush back.

Who in their right mind would design a restaurant like this? The diners are in the back, while the kitchen staff gets the views of Central Park. Here you have million dollar views which are completely wasted by drop down range hoods and the kitchen staff laughing and scratching. The idea is supposed to be that you see how the food is prepared, but alas not even this is possible since most tables are too far away. They ought to gut the place and start all over.
The food was pretty good, but a little on the skimpy side. The house Chardonnay was from Long Island? and by the glass they barely fill the glass to a third.
The service was erratic. It took us a long time to even get a glass of water.
This is a restaurant that is definitely for the tourists, not for New Yorkers
