Solid French Brasserie in Lincoln Center

The atmosphere is simple but cozy and the noise level gets pretty loud on a Saturday night. The fried artichokes and arugula ravioli were very good. The mixed green salad and shrimp cocktail were pretty standard French brasserie food. Takeway: good, casual restaurant in the Lincoln Center area.

Dinner here six of us on a special family occasion on February 2 was dreary and disappointing. When I reserved I asked "please seat us at a not-so-crowded table." Despite that, we were crammed into a tight corner. Every single staff person was sullen. The food was, at best, mediocre. Friends who knew we were celebrating there that evening had pre-ordered a bottle of champagne for us which never materialized. It seems as if the management thinks that treating people poorly lends the restaurant cache.

It's Not Really About the Food

Food is solid bistro fare competently executed. Always good, seldom outstanding. But the whole experience is fantastic. The look, feel, taste and menu combine for a bistro experience rare this side of Paris. Take a date -- if you can't hit it off with him/her after this place, it ain't gonna happen.

I was highly disappointed with the cuisine (my steak was overcooked and could barely swallow it). For the prices, it is most definitely not worth the trip. There are better places in this city for French cuisine!

Mediocre food. High prices for what you receive on your plate. I won't return.

LUXEMBOURG'S LAMBENT GLOW

After nearly twenty-five years, Cafe Luxembourg's glow has not diminished. There's an energy immediately palpable upon entering the lovely room with its red leather banquettes and rattan bistro chairs and, for spring, huge floral arrangements of cherry blossoms. Honey blondes and silver-haired gentlemen mix with long-necked dancers and t.v. actors. It's a mix of the best of New York, all basking in the lighting’s soft pink glow. And there's a spark to the brasserie-classic menu. For spring, a wild mushroom salad and a sublime asparagus, fava bean, and ramp lasagna, so fresh as to convince you that you are eating tableside in the garden. Crispy artichokes with an olive tapenade. That bread, so chewy, and that butter, so rich. A perfectly fine onion soup. And desserts at nearly ten dollars a piece nearly merit the price: a ginger and carrot mousse, a banana semi-freddo napoleon. Even in the midst of the pre-theatre rush and the eight-o'clock crush, everything flows smoothly at this well-run institution. Clearly the three nude Graces who adorn the Luxembourg's walls and les cartes postales are still safeguarding this New York institution which continues to age like the best of wines and the most beautiful people.

Cafe Luxembourg has been around for decades it seems, and yet it still never misses a beat. The service is friendly and helpful and the food is always just what you hope for from a great French bistro. For those who like spacious dining rooms, this might not be there first choice, but I find the whole place buzzing with happy diners enjoying consistently excellent food.

A lovely atmosphere, but I think far away from its heyday. The brunch/breakfast menu is really just average and the coffee always seems too stewed. As for lunch, well price-wise the $20.04 lunch menu is great value, but often the choices seem banal and a little too quick to come out. The Luxemburger is a house-favourite and will always please.

Not many great french restaurants in the upper west side- and this one has always been my favorite as it is consistent, friendly, and on top of it has the best breakfast in the neighborhood. The scones with cream, hot coffee and a poached egg or two in the morning are superlative. There is never a wait and it tends to be calm and quiet with only a few locals in attendance. This is my favorite meal at this classic and longtime restaurant.
