After waiting in line for about 15 minutes, along with other Sunday afternoon coffee & desert seekers, we were seated in a lovely corner booth, with plush comfortable seating. I ordered the caffe creme & the Napolean torte. This is truly some of the best coffee I have ever had. The torte was absolutely divine & was served with a dollop of heavenly whipped cream. The dark mahogony tables & paneling made it feel very cozy on a rainy Sunday afternoon. The crowd was a good mix of people. Lots of Sunday times readers, couples, and desert afficianados. All of the deserts were delicious. Very authentic German & Austrian food on the main menu as well. Service was good, although we didn't necessarily have one waiter the whole time. Overall, we had a great experience here & would go back any time.

After a hectic and miserable long work week, it was a perfect weekend brunch for me on Saturday upstairs at the Neue Galerie before seeing the Klimt exhibition. Just sitting by the window, watching the people in Central Park, this cafĂ© gives you an affordable quick European trip or the feeling of being an Upper East Side lady (or gentleman) like Jackie Kennedy Onassis. I had the Avocado Salad with crabmeat and cherry tomatoes ($18) and 1900 Vienna tea ($6.00) on a silver tray. The cafĂ© is covered in dark wood paneling, a dark wood floor and a big antique marble fireplace; the chairs are Vienna style black bentwood. The portions are pretty small, but it is beautiful and elegant. The fresh baked breads were served with the food. The waiter was kind of rushing us to leave because there was a long line after Noon. When we were there, they were having a credit card machine problem and we had pay in cash. If it was working, we probably would have had dessert too. The building itself is rich and beautiful, and this cafĂ© gives you an appreciation of good taste of art, culture and atmosphere.

If you're into austrian style restaurant, I recommend Cafe Sabarky. It's very typical: quiet, old school style seating, newspapers and of course, they bring you water without ice. I had the gulasch suppe and it was delightful. Portions could be a little bigger but again, this is a typical austrian restaurant so I won't complain. Another cool thing about it - the location. It's in the Austrian museum and also a few blocks from the MET.

We live in Vienna, Austria, and as curious, frequent New York City visitors, we had to try this to satisfy our curiosity. Everything was very authentic, just like a Vienna Kaffeehaus the decor, the waiters and how they were dressed, the tables, silverwear and the little silver tray on which they served the coffee. The coffee, the desserts, tasted just right. I had Melange (a typically Viennese form of foamed-milk cappucino) and Sachertorte (A two layer chocolate cake with apricot jam between the layers and covered with chocolate frosting). Even the warm food our friends had (Schnitzel, Gulyasch) looked just right, and they seemed to like them, but they said they preferred the deserts. I didn't try them, but I guess for Austrian standards the warm food was just "ok" not excellent. They even had Almdudler (an Austrian softdrink similar to Ginger Ale) which my Austrian-American son requested. There were only two things that were untypical for a "Wiener Kaffeehaus" - the long line in front of it (never had to wait for a table at a Kaffeehaus in Vienna), and the ice-cubes in my son's Almdudler (you would never be served ice cubes in Vienna unless you asked for them). Nice experience.
