Cafe Steinhof has been our home away from home since they opened. It's a great place to hang out, come for music or movies, and the food is absolutely delicious. Try the chicken paprika, or the souerbraten (pot roast) with red cabbage, everything has a ton of flavor, and the service could not be nicer ! I recommend the amazing chocolate custard or the Linzer Torte for dessert. The Sour Cherry Martini and Elderblossom drinks are outstanding and quite unusual. Nice European beer selection as well.I give it 5 stars.

This place is GREAT for what it is. The price is right, the food is great and the atmosphere is relaxing. I go here all the time. Get the chocolate custard if you know what's good for you. ~DLewis

Not very authentic and everything was overcooked or dry

I wanted to like this place, but everything my girlfriend and I ordered was overcooked or dry. We started with the pate, which was very dry. Next up: Bratwurst. The sausage tasted like it was from a package of Hillshire Farms and, worse, it was completely lacerated and dry (when you make a bunch of incisions and then cook it, the meat dries up). My girlfriend's trout was also completely dry and devoid of taste, but the side of greenbeans were cold and undercooked. We had intended to order the Linzer torte, but the prospect of dry cake was too offputting. Service was friendly, but slightly inept. When the waitress accidentally spilled some of my beer on the table as she was serving it, she apologized and then walked away - without cleaning it up. I cleaned it with my napkin, which was no big deal, but then she never offered me another napkin. All in all, this was a big disappointment. If you want authentic Germanic food, go to Loreley.

I detest "German food," but I love the food you get in Berlin, and I rather like Steinhof. At least for brunch, it's more Neue Gallerie than Thomas Biesel - and the ambiance is uncrowded and mellow, if a teensy bit hipper than my usual scene. I found the elderflower spritzer delicious.

Steinhof has to be one of the best places in the south slope. I'm vegetarian and even though there isn't a huge selectioin the Rosti, Cheese Spaetzle and Avocado Sandwich are all great. The even better thing about Cafe Steinhof is the vibe. A nice conversational bar with live bands and films and stuff going on.

Or in other words: For schnitzel lovers. If you're craving some good ol' German grub, this is the place. It's casual and cozy--a great hangout. Just don't expect a whole lot from the spotty menu. Vegetarians may have difficulty. Good beer selection.
