Will I Be Back? Umm That's A No Served With A Side Of Not

Last night me,the beau & his best friend attempted to dine here. We'd just left the CMJ Festival where he performed w/the headliner. I've been here a few times but last night was disappointing! We were told there would be a 10 min wait for 3 after 15 mins "Chris",the hostess, comes out w/a clipboard & asks "Are you on the guest/VIP list?" Since I've never heard of such a thing at a restaurant. I inquired "there's a VIP List to have a meal & get some food?" So this led to a short discussion where Chris was very nasty, dismissive & snobby leaving off with him snippily saying "you can call between 9-5 tomorrow, but no one will probably have time to speak to you until Monday because its just too busy" & then he just turned and walked inside. I have recommended this place to many people in the past among friends & in business but I won't again after this! This behavior was completely unacceptable. I know many more places that serve comfort food that's outstanding & have better respect for their patrons, than to ever spend another dime here. I called this morning to speak w/management & the hostess that answered & manager I spoke w/were pleasant & apologetic. I was told of their standing VIP/Guest list general policy but to avoid poor customer service it should be communicated to staff on how to express to customers when the situation arises. However I'm not sure this was all that was at work here last night & there is such a distaste left in my mouth after this that I won't be back.

RUDE HOST!!! Do NOT come here with KIDS!! We arrived, with our two young kids, on a quiet Sunday morning when the restaurant was about 60% full (with plenty of empty tables). The RUDE host told us that it would take TEN MINUTES to clear a table for us to sit down. He might have well said "We don't want you and your children in our restaurant" as there were empty tables and ones that were cleared and set to sitdown.

Middle School Cafeteria with a Side of Bullies

Beware coming here after hours as the restaurant devolves into a sorry impersonation of a private club. Bouncers and not-prada-but-nada managers sashay like Anna Wintour "filtering" who goes in and who stays out for an hour or so. When asked why, they rudely claim "no seats" are available" or that they "take people with reservations first", both of which are obvious lies. Girls are also asked to "show what they're wearing" so the in-house thugs can decide whether they cut the line. I have been to list-only, exclusive clubs. But Cafeteria? Neither the smug doorstaff nor its "management"--ill-fitted in their Costco suits--could ever elevate Cafeteria to a "private club." It is the epitome of putting Duane Reade lipstick on a Chelsea pig. And while I understand people line up to get into "exclusive hot spots," it's simply pathetic to do so for a piece of fried macaroni and cheese. I would have stayed an hour or even longer if the restaurant had a long line (like it used to). That would be fair. But to be constantly belittled while you wait and snubbed by staff not qualified enough to even run prison cafeteria is more than a bit unappetizing. The food simply isn't that good. Because in a proper dining place where the menu and service are truly amazing, there would be no need for these gimmicks. It is such a shame that a wonderful place that was known for its wholesome, heartwarming fare has now been turned into "the ultimate late night middle school cafeteria run by bullies."

Good mac and cheese but definitely not worth the hype. Great drinks though!

I came here for an early dinner one night with a friend, and was excited to go because I had heard good things about it. We went around 6:30 on a Tuesday, and didn't have much of a problem getting a table. I loved the scene, and the food was pretty good too (I had tacos and my friend had the turkey burger.) I also had a lavender litchi martini which was bomb. Don't come here if your looking for an amazing meal. But, if your looking to sit in a cool atmosphere around some hip people and have a couple cocktails and a good bite, this is your place.

Moral of the story. you must please the bouncers in order to get in. Apparently there is this rule that parties over 5 cannot come in after 11pm nor would they allow you to split the parties. After numerous conversations between my party and misperception of the bouncers. They told the manager to not let us in because we were being slick when in reality we was trying to accommodate the situation so that the birthday girl can have her dinner there since we only drove two hrs away. I was so disgusted especially since the manager sided with tne bouncers instead of assessing the situation himself. What really ticked me off is the bouncer inappropriately yelling at the birthday girl about communication when the person he shouldve yelled at is the hostess who was going to let us in. I wonder how much money has these bouncers caused this place to lose. They should be worrying about the life of the staff and the customers, not how many people in a party thats the hostess job. Check out reviews on the cafeteria home page through google there are more complaints about the bouncers!

I go to Cafeteria with coworkers like once a month - it's kinda become our regular joint. We usually go friday nights, and there's almost always a wait, but its worth it. Their bloody mary has some fire, love the spice! For apps its always the Mac and cheese (AMAZING - especially the truffle one) and the ribs which literally fall off the bone. Last time I went, I tried the chicken tagellio which was d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s. We usually end the night with two orders of fried oreos (they're like Lays - you can't eat just one) and the apple pie ravioli which I have yet to see (or taste) anything like it anywhere else . . . After re-reading this now I'm hungry again!

I will say this, the food is fabulous, the service is great, everyone is very friendly - just mind the lemonades, they are quite tart and the bloody mary's are not like cesears sooo it all depends on what you like though. I stayed in NYC for 3 days and my friend and I went here for breakfast every day - we were walking to SOHO and wanted breakfast, saw the place, went in and kept going back everyday! The weekends are far more packed, especially during brunch so do expect a bit of a wait (30 min), but i'll be honest - its totally worth it. Do try the calamari salad - had that 2 days in a row - its a god send!

Cafeteria is rough. In my 4 times there, I have had 4 difference experiences. The 1st time was very late in the morning, it was pretty packed & it was pleasant. The 2nd time was at 8pm on a Saturday, the waitress was pleasant, yet busy, hard to find attentiveness & the food was mediocre. Can't go wrong w/ the mac & cheese, if its still on there or the calamari, but how can you go wrong w/ calamari. It's the dipping sauces & peppers or the like that add to the dish & its lacking there. The hanger steak is ok, but its hanger steak. So well 2 plus 2 is 4. The 3rd time I was there, I thought I was a terrorist with a side of C-4, we were seated next to very ostentatious gay clientele & their loud, boring incessant rambling; not 1 person came to ask us for cocktails, we looked around aimlessly; the couple to my left, even started to look, as if saying, 'wow I feel sorry for these 2, no one has come to even talk to them' We elegantly slipped out of the place and went our way. ZERO out of ZERO that time. So 3 years later I tried the bar, snuck in a hugely busy Friday at a very busy time, and hankered staring at 'whatever' until a stool opened up. IT WAS EPIC. The food was fast, burger or something before clubbing, the bartender was so really amazing, made me a blueberry type infused martini and got one on the house, which in all our years in Manhattan, rarely if ever happens. 30 bucks for a two cocktails and a burger with a salad. phhtttt DO THE BAR, but don't expect Per Se.
