Been here several times but now giving it the ax. Upon arrival it helped that I shared the same last name as the host so we were seated rather quickly, but while waiting at the empty bar, my man and I made eye contact with the female bartender while she, for 5 minutes, cleaned glasses in front of us without even asking what we would be interested in having. After making a comment she continued to clean another glass, and it wasnÂ’t until the host came over to seat us and I said something to him, did she then begin pouring the first drink. We ordered fish to our liking because the waiter asked how we wanted it cooked. When the Mahi Mahi came out like machine pressed cardboard the now shift switch waitress responded by telling Mantoy that they don't cook the fish to temperature?? The salmon was excellent as was the popcorn shrimp, Mac 'n cheese, and fried chicken on waffles YUM. Oh, but don't forget to look for the tiny print on the last page that notes: 18% gratuity included for all parties. a.k.a. don't tip more than you already are.
On the plus side, it *is* open 24 hours. . .

Cafeteria. Relatively inexpensive, in Chelsea, outdoor seating for nice springtime nights. The food was fine--is it even possible to mess up a turkey burger?--but the service was pretty bad. Friendly enough, to be sure, but oh-so absentminded and lazy. The oven broke, and it took the waitress 30 minutes to fess up. Not that our food needed to be baked! (Calamari salad + turkey burger = broken oven should not have been our problem.) The music is great, even if you cannot hear yourself over it, and it IS open all day and all night. So go at 4am when everyone else has closed their doors, or earlier, if all you want is booze (just start somewhere else for dinner).

I've been going to this place since I was a tourist 8 yrs ago, but after last night I will NEVER go again. The manager on duty went out of his way to make my friend and I feel unwelcome after we sat ourselves with another party who was already eating. There was not a problem with space as there were plenty of empty seats and plenty of staff. Although the food is consistently good, I would prefer a more pleasant dining experience over food that is so-so.
What is this, 1960?

I just came from this restaurant with my date. After reading mixed reviews I thought I'd give my own.. IT WAS TERRIBLE! It was so embarrassing, they totally ignored us we waited 20 mins for a waiter to take our order (the place was not even busy!) he was very abrupt with us and did not wait for us to finish saying our order we had to call him back. The air was very uncomfortable. I never went somewhere where I felt uncomfortable in my own skin. What's even more worse is that a couple next to us, were treated like royalty, the only difference between us was our skin. That's sickening. I really did feel sick and ashamed. Equality is definitely not in their service agenda. I would never recommend this spot to anyone. Me: 20 yr old, biracial. college student.
A "MUST" Taste Spot in The City!!!

The Cafeteria is an excellent place to go eat. Especially after a night out in Manhattan, and you want GREAT food! Unlike these other reviews, the service is not horrible. The staff is very friendly and curtious. I haven't come across any "snobby" staff members yet and I've been there over 20 times. The macaroni and cheese is a MUST HAVE when you go there. Try it for yourself. Give it a chance. You won't regret it.
Service, what service?

3 years ago I vowed never to come back, but one night, after a tiring, long day showing my cousin from out-of-country, and my l-t memory was purged, a random thought entered my brain - what a great idea to take her to this hip, comfort food joint. I was reminded IMMEDiately, why I vowed never to return. It took 15 minutes before someone took our drink order, and another 15-20 minutes before they arrived. My martini was warm, and my cousin's bellini were warm! The appetizers arrived late, and before we were even 1/2 way through them, the entrees arrived and they RUSHED us to finish our appetizers! Our server was pleasant, but she shouldn't have spend most of her time talking to her friends. Food is okay, nothing spectacular.
Your local P.S. has a better cafeteria than this...

I've been here only a few times as a Midwestern expat now rolling in the big city. First of all, can we just nix the baby blue and brown polyester, people?! The worst eyesore ever to see gay guys dressed so poorly. That is probably why the service is sub-par -- the management makes them wear that crap! The food is okay if a bit on the salty side; the mac 'n' cheese is good but not phenomenal as some people claim. The hostesses are D-list model wannabes without a hint of propriety or friendliness. This place is soo over; I honestly doubt it ever 'was'.
Fine, but ignore the hype

Comfortable, non-pretentious atmosphere, while still remaining hip. The food was tasty, but contrary to the hype it was not something I will be writing home about. I had the ceaser's salad with chicken which was delicious and they make a good coffee too. The service was attentive, careful to refill water glasses and each course came quickly. However, some of the waiters did seem a bit snobby. I would go again for a casual lunch, but won't be rushing back, still seeking to find something better in a neighbourhood which is lacking great, casual restaurants.
Bad Service = Bad Experience

I had a good experience up until the point when the busboy spilled an entire coke in my lap. It was handled VERY unprofessionally. The manager told me I could get the skirt drycleaned and bring in the receipt for reimbursement. Any quality restaurant would have proactively addressed the situation. I spent $250 at this restaurant. They could have at least thrown in a free dessert or glass of wine! Furthermore, they were rude about it and acted like it was really about the money. It was about the principle of good service - which clearly they do not get.
Food great, servers rude!!

I've been to Cafeteria a few times. This last time was the last. I've never had a pleasant server at Cafeteria. Everyone is very snobby that works there. It's a shame the food is so great.
