I have been wanting to go to Candle Cafe for a long time. I have been to many vegetarian restaurants in the past years. I must say that Candle 79 is the most interesting one so far. The prices are a bit how but I think that it is worth it. The menu is amazing and the service we got was great. Our waitress was very friendly and patient. My friends who are not vegetarians where impressed and said that would go back I am inspired and am looking forward to buying the cookbook. I am not from N.Y but I will for sure go back on my next visit. I definitely recommend this restaurant.

Was looking forwards to eating some vegan fare in NYC and can honestly say we were not disappointed. Had Brunch on a Sunday and the food and server were fabulous.... Four people with various selections all good to great. no point describing which as menu changes seasonally. Hope if we return to NYC that we can go back for more YUMMY food.

Last year, my wife visited our daughter in NYC, the first major trip since we firmly established a whole plant food diet. My research suggested that they include Candle 79. I heard rave reviews and added it to my visit there. While I must admit that I liked the appointments that create the spa like environment, it was the staff and, even more so the food, that sets Candle 79 apart. We ate at many vegan restaurants as well as some Asian ones during my trip. Each offered us their specialty and fared on a comparable plane with other restaurants of general type and kind that we have eaten in the past. This was not true of Candle 79. It was wonderful. The highlight of my meal was the seitan piccata. I previously have eaten varieties of veal or chicken piccata throughout the New York area, in Italy and many other locations. This dish was right at the top, with the succulent seitan as good or better than any meat. The sauce melted in my mouth with the lemony caper sauce that only the best piccata can offer. The cutlets were very think and placed over spinach, potato cake and mushrooms. Mmmm. The service was excellent. We arrived at a busy hour, but were seated quickly. Our server was especially interested in our having a memorable experience. She made us feel special. Overall, the best meal I have had in many years in NYC. I can hardly wait to go back next time.

We pre-booked a table from the UK for thanksgiving and a 30th birthday celebration back in August. We phoned 3 days before to confirm and the person on the phone was really warm and friendly and said that they were looking forward to seeing us and helping celebrate the birthday. This was not the case on the night itself. We turned up on time to be stood waiting by the door and were ignored by the members off staff who were at the door. We waited patiently in our big coats while people just walked past us on. When we had to let someone know we were ready we were taken to our table that wasnt ready. So far not a good experiance and we were already feeling deflated. The restaraunt upstairs was so hot and dark we nearly fell asleep, there was no atmosphere and the staff looked stressed and overworked. Our server was friendly enough but didnt provide us with the service we expected on ThanksgIVING Or when it was a 30th birthday celebration. The Set menu was $75 each and the food very good quality but it was served quickly and we were presented with our bill before we finished our desert. Was so sad and disssapointed when we left and a little embarrassed as i had spoke so highly off the place before we got there. Sadly wont be going back and wont be recommending Candle 79. A throughly dissapointing and expensive experiance. We had better meals and experiances at much cheaper restaraunts !

Great food but overall not a good experience

I've been here twice. The first time I didn't have a reservation so was unsurprised when I had to wait for 20 minutes for a table. The food is lovely, the menu varied and the staff pleasant. The second time I had a reservation but was told to come back 30 minutes later, which was annoying. When I returned, I still had to wait and seemed now to be behind people who didn't have reservations, giving me the impression that as soon as I left they forgot all about me. So my husband and I finally sat down about 45 minutes after our reservation. No-one took our drinks order for about 15 minutes, but after that service was fine. Again, the food was great, imaginative vegetarian food, very fresh and great desserts. I wouldn't return though because each time i've been there it has disrupted plans for the rest of the evening because getting seated takes so long.

Sumptuous cuisine in a warm setting

We enjoyed a lovely lunch here, with attentive wait staff and elegant, richly satisfying food. The wine we chose, a biodynamic pinot noir from Oregon, was one of the best we've tasted, and its price was fair. The avocado-jicama tartare and wild mushroom stuffed tempeh were excellent. This is a restaurant which will please all palates.

Candle 79 Will Light Up Your Night!

The Best Restaurant I have ever experienced. The food is wonderfully fresh. It is vegetarian and vegan but my carnivore relatives adored it! My super picky stepdad exclaimed that he enjoyed the best risotto that he ever experienced in his life. Sorbet has always been a dessert that I have been lukewarm about, but Candle 79's homemade sorbet sampler is worth going "ga ga" over! They also offer great specials. Nice, romantic and comfortable atmosphere. Perfect for special occasions.
