Loved It!!! Very good tasty food. We have been several times, and sit at the bar( which i think is best) everytime, check out what looks good, have a great beer, only 1 kind. Discover what they are making, and order slowly. Everyone has their own experience, ours has been great. Salt is needed for a healthy body. If you can not have salt, order no salt. Do not complain, stay home!!! This place is friendly, fast and delightful cuisine!!!
crowded, pricey, good food, great energy

Crowded space but great energy. Prices a little steep but good wine and great food. Kitchen is right in front of you...in a good way.

the food is top notch, inventive and always delicious. the tapas menu allows you to taste a variety of the fantastic dishes. the crowd is downtown but not too chic and not stuffy, but the waiters need a kick in the ass to speed it up. sit at the bar, the bartenders are much friendlier and knowledgeable. the oxtail, peppers, duck, and spanish ham are musts!
Tapas win my heart again

Lovely Wednesday night venture out. No reservation yet we were luckily seated by the bar right away. Extensive wine menu. Reasonably priced tapas. We wanted to oder everything on the menu. Make sure you get the lame and Ox Tail. Exotic , exotic, exotic!
Casa Mono - Cozy-High Energy-One of a Kind

A great new addition to the Gramercy scene! Small, cozy with a great - fascinating open kitchen and a 'way out' one of a kind menu served in the true Spanish style called "rationes' -portions meant to share with a group of friends or family - as opposed to "tapas' that are portioned for a single diner. Although I found not a lot of 'familiar' preparations that I can relate to my 16 years in Spain, they were all -without exception- expertly prepared, adequately presented and very delicious! I highly recommend it! Knowing the Batalit - Bastianich model - this will only get better and better. My closing observation is that I would enjoy more dishes based on fresh seafood (shellfish) and more authentic presentation of jamon serano (not the paper thin Italian slicer approach used here.)
The best and WORST meal in recent memory

The simple problem with Casa Mono is the service. After arriving for a reservation with 2of3 party members, we were told that their policy was not to seat tables until the entire party had arrived. Having lived in NY for 15 years we were intimately familiar with this annoying policy at NYC restaurants, even with a reservation. What was amazing was the comment by the hostess/ "manager" as we were seated, that it was their "policy" to only hold reservations for 15 minutes, despite the fact that we had arrived on time, and that they would need the table back in 1 hour. Now, being a New Yorker, I've been treated like pond scum by some of the finest restaurants in the city, but what amazes me is that this particular travesty of a dining experience occurred at a restaurant that was less than half full. Call me old fashioned, but rate a restaurant as a complete dining experience, not simply on the quality of the food, which in this case was outstanding. I've been treated far better by far "worse" establishments. What was one of my favorite restaurants is ruined by an inexperienced team.

I found this place by chance, had no idea of the press it has received. My experience was not jaded by any pre-conceived ideas. Loved my meal and enjoyed it's atmosphere. Staff was very young but mostly friendly/possibly a bit dismissive at the door. Food was fast and very good. I thought it was inexpensive for the experience. Thought it was a very good experience and thought the harsh reviews were very odd in my opinion. Lamb was perfectly done/memorable actually. Short ribs the same. Goat cheese and sweet potatoe fried dumplings were unique and yummy. Lots of choices that are a bit adventurous for most diners which to me is a good thing. Don't go with diners that are limited. Additionally the wine list was extensive for such a tiny place and there were ENDLESS reasonable choices. I rate this as a great little place with a unique dining experience - maybe not for a saturday at 8 pm but a place i will revisit. Also, what is up with the harsh reviews. I like the whole package and believe anyone visiting WITHOUT preconceived notions will like the place just fine.
A very small adventure in eating

I found the food generally excellent although the portions were often miniscule, and at times it was difficult to know what one was eating without the waiter as a guide. The roasted brocolli was delicious. Lamb was fine. Oxtail so so. Wines were fine. I was pleased by the imagination and good will that went into the resturant, but less than filled and satisfied when I left it.

The space is very cozy and charming. The atmosphere couldn't be more inviting - it's a perfect 2-person restaurant. The wait staff is very attentive and helpful, but what come out of the kitchen was average. One dish stood out as very bad (the Oxtail) it was extremely salty. Another dish stood out as worth a 2nd trip, the bread pudding. The bread pudding had a creme brule-like crust with caramel ice cream and delicious rum-soaked raisins. The other dishes were a 6 on a scale of 1-10. The wine options were plentiful and the recommended wine was reasonable and delicious.
Good food, bad waiter.

Overall food was good, until we ordered coffee. This young waiter came and gave us a check first, before we got our coffee and said "I will bring your coffee later" Soon after we could hear him telling another waiter that we were not leaving we were still waiting for coffee. We felt rushed to leave. Well, at first he repeated our order as "Calamari(Italian)" instead of "Calamares(Spanish)" Should know where he is working at. Terrible waiter can spoil a good meal. Little disappointment since I own Batali's Spain book....
