Take the good with the bad....

The space is very cozy and charming. The atmosphere couldn't be more inviting - it's a perfect 2-person restaurant. The wait staff is very attentive and helpful, but what come out of the kitchen was average. One dish stood out as very bad (the Oxtail) it was extremely salty. Another dish stood out as worth a 2nd trip, the bread pudding. The bread pudding had a creme brule-like crust with caramel ice cream and delicious rum-soaked raisins. The other dishes were a 6 on a scale of 1-10. The wine options were plentiful and the recommended wine was reasonable and delicious.
The place STINKS

We were a party of 6....the noise was sooo loud we had two complete conversations...North and South we could not communicate to the whole table. The waiter insisted we order all 12 tapas at once...so goes grazing!!?? place was so crowded and close. Get me outter here! Frank Malone Palos Verdes, Ca. NEVER AGAIN

Simply awesome! Sometimes service can be a bit rude (but not most times), but you'll be rewarded by the food! Foie gras and duck breasts, always perfect. The pan con tomate is amazing, as the calamari and the octopus. Wine list is a bit expensive, but you can always find some Spanish wines with a good value. In a nutshell: lovely, tiny treasure in Gramercy. Feels like dining in Barcelona.
Jumped The Shark

It's very sad, but true. Casa Mono has jumped the shark. I've been going here for years and refused to believe the terrible reviews. Even when my sister, a loyal patron, warned me against dining their for my birthday, I proceeded with much regret. The food was bad - poorly seasoned, luke warm, not very inventive. The service was awful - rude and obnoxious. Our waiter kept trying to pressure my boyfriend and I to order more tapas and wine. Save yourself the time, money, and aggravation and skip it. Time for Mario to stop traveling around with Gwenyth and spend some time at his restaurants

I don't know what other's who bad mouth this place have experienced. BUT I have been a dozen or more times at all times of day and night and the service is good , fun and very knowledgeable. Perhaps one needs to be well traveled and understand a tapas /bar/restaurant to fully appreciate it. I give it top marks and the lamb chops are to die for but then all of the tapas are delectible little treats.

i was very unhappy the service, our server's attitude was so rude and unpleasant.we felt like been looked upon by him, it wasn't quality service at all.
If you enjoy horrible service, average food and a pricey bill, come here!

What a nasty and bitter old hostess they have here (and just found out she is the manager!). I have never been treated so poorly than I was tonight at Casa Mono. After we ran a $350 bill, we were kicked out of our table because they had a reservation waiting. She could have politely asked us to finish up, or even sent us to the bar next door to finish our wine, but instead this sour lemon of a hostess (and manager) was incredibly rude and practically pulled a glass of wine out of my friend's hand. Very unprofessional. I dine out quite often and have never experienced anything like this...still in shock actually. They should be embarrassed and ashamed of their rude staff (hostess/manager specifically). The food was nothing special. I do not recommend this place. As a loyal Lupa, Babbo and Otto regular, your money and time are better spent at these other Batali establishments, not Casa Mono. This place stinks!
The best and WORST meal in recent memory

The simple problem with Casa Mono is the service. After arriving for a reservation with 2of3 party members, we were told that their policy was not to seat tables until the entire party had arrived. Having lived in NY for 15 years we were intimately familiar with this annoying policy at NYC restaurants, even with a reservation. What was amazing was the comment by the hostess/ "manager" as we were seated, that it was their "policy" to only hold reservations for 15 minutes, despite the fact that we had arrived on time, and that they would need the table back in 1 hour. Now, being a New Yorker, I've been treated like pond scum by some of the finest restaurants in the city, but what amazes me is that this particular travesty of a dining experience occurred at a restaurant that was less than half full. Call me old fashioned, but rate a restaurant as a complete dining experience, not simply on the quality of the food, which in this case was outstanding. I've been treated far better by far "worse" establishments. What was one of my favorite restaurants is ruined by an inexperienced team.

Overall food was good, until we ordered coffee. This young waiter came and gave us a check first, before we got our coffee and said "I will bring your coffee later" Soon after we could hear him telling another waiter that we were not leaving we were still waiting for coffee. We felt rushed to leave. Well, at first he repeated our order as "Calamari(Italian)" instead of "Calamares(Spanish)" Should know where he is working at. Terrible waiter can spoil a good meal. Little disappointment since I own Batali's Spain book....

I have been to the adjacent Bar Jamon a number of times for wine and loved the service & vibe. A friend and I went to Casa Mono for a quick dinner and expected the same, but it was night and day. The ratio of staff to customers was easily 1:1 yet it took them 5 minutes to even ask if we wanted water. After another 10 minutes we had to flag someone down to take our drink and dinner order (which was delicious, btw) and then flag someone down again to ask for the check after sitting for 10-15 min totally finished with our meals. In a restaurant so small with prices so high, you'd think the servers would have better manners than to stand huddled around the bar talking to each other and ignoring the customers who are less than 5 feet away. Maybe the manager was off tonight?? I hate it when they act like they're doing you a favor by serving you. I would not go back for the service, but the pork and the beets were both delish. sigh.
