Overhyped and Overpriced

Casa Mono is not that great. Save your money. I hate to be ‘that guy’ because that’s not usually me but this place is far too expensive for what it is. No question about it. Pair that was a mediocre staff and you have an experience that is less than ideal. At a tapas bar a great server is there to guide you through the menu. For these prices service should be great. Great wine list with many affordable selections though.

Mario's Newest Restaurant

is tiny, cramped, loud and smoky (from the grill). If you want to go out and relax with a glass of wine and some delicious tapas, don't go to Casa Mono. If you want to get bumped into by waitstaff and other patrons when you are seated, and not mind smelling like you've been cooking all day, then this is your place. Good food, NOT relaxing. It was a bit rushed, the wait person encouraged us to order more food than we wanted, very cramped and pretty expensive for what you get. I would not go back here.

Serve food or make money

Restaurateurs are to make a nice living by satisfying their customers with their culinary creations. To focus on making money, or to focus on creating the food and value – therefore making the customers feel totally happy as they pay for their satisfaction. The focus of Casa Mono is on making money. It practices the art of squeezing more time than there is from the restaurant clock. If you can’t get a reservation (for whatever reason they give you on the phone), but don’t mind hurrying up during the supposedly walk-in time, this could be your place. Be warned, though, the wines are expensive and the seating uncomfortable. The food can be good – but you have to know which ones to order, serving more like the bait for the wines to make the money.

I decided to take two of my best Spaniard friends to this tapas bar thinking it would make them very happy. It was far, far from our expectations. Service was slow, some interpretations of genuine tapas were just dissaponting and our experience was not a good one. Thanks God someone at work recommended me another Spanish restaurant, La Nacional. What a difference!!! Those were real tapas, genuine real tapas. there are certain things that are only good at home, but if you feel homesick......go to La Nacional.

I have to say, I agree with the majority of the reviews on this page. The food was really very good and the waiter who looked after us was lovely, but the experience was marred by the sommelier who, having recommended wines out of our price range was visibily offended and morose after was asked for something more reasonable. We had been told we had to be prepared to give up our table by 10pm (and as we were slightly late, were agreeable to this), but the service was slow so, at ten minutes past ten when our coffees had only just arrived I went to check with the hostess the status of the table and to let her know we were just finishing up. Unfortunately the sommelier was at the front desk and I was told in no uncertain terms that, yes, they did need our table and they wanted us out as soon as possible! Such a shame as the food really was delicious, especially the duck egg with mushroom and truffle oil.

Just stay at Bar Jamon

Medicore at best. After arriving a bit early for a reservation, we were told to go next door to Bar Jamon. Which was a great lively & proper tapas place next door. The waitress was cordial but seemed rushed, busy and was never available. The sommelier, a young woman under 30, came over to 'help' us with the wine list. We asked her to suggest a medium bodied, mid-priced red - she seemed confused yet obliged. When we asked what temparanillos she would suggest she had the gull to ask if she had heard us correctly before were we not looking for a medium body red? Yes, we were but as a customer I reserve the right to change my mind & not need to be patronized when doing so. The food was okay - the cod croquettas lack the taste of cod, the foie gras was good, we ordered the heirloom tomato special yet received the patates bravas & the lamb was okay but not med-rare like ordered but med-well. We left wishing we had simply stayed at Bar Jamon and ordered one of their cheese plates.

I have been to the adjacent Bar Jamon a number of times for wine and loved the service & vibe. A friend and I went to Casa Mono for a quick dinner and expected the same, but it was night and day. The ratio of staff to customers was easily 1:1 yet it took them 5 minutes to even ask if we wanted water. After another 10 minutes we had to flag someone down to take our drink and dinner order (which was delicious, btw) and then flag someone down again to ask for the check after sitting for 10-15 min totally finished with our meals. In a restaurant so small with prices so high, you'd think the servers would have better manners than to stand huddled around the bar talking to each other and ignoring the customers who are less than 5 feet away. Maybe the manager was off tonight?? I hate it when they act like they're doing you a favor by serving you. I would not go back for the service, but the pork and the beets were both delish. sigh.

Overall food was good, until we ordered coffee. This young waiter came and gave us a check first, before we got our coffee and said "I will bring your coffee later" Soon after we could hear him telling another waiter that we were not leaving we were still waiting for coffee. We felt rushed to leave. Well, at first he repeated our order as "Calamari(Italian)" instead of "Calamares(Spanish)" Should know where he is working at. Terrible waiter can spoil a good meal. Little disappointment since I own Batali's Spain book....

The space is very cozy and charming. The atmosphere couldn't be more inviting - it's a perfect 2-person restaurant. The wait staff is very attentive and helpful, but what come out of the kitchen was average. One dish stood out as very bad (the Oxtail) it was extremely salty. Another dish stood out as worth a 2nd trip, the bread pudding. The bread pudding had a creme brule-like crust with caramel ice cream and delicious rum-soaked raisins. The other dishes were a 6 on a scale of 1-10. The wine options were plentiful and the recommended wine was reasonable and delicious.
