This may have been the worst dining experience I have ever had in NY. The glasses and silverware were dirty, the service was rude and small substitutions such as shape of pasta would not be accommodated. The tables were so crammed in and the noise level was so loud you could not even carry on a concersation with the person across from you. There is a reason all they can charge is 10 dollars for there pasta which was tasteless and overcooked.

"TERRIBLE. I HAD THE WORST EXPERIENCE THERE TONIGHT. The food was okay, but the service was awful. The owner is racist. Please do not justify his behavior by eating at his restaurant. My jewish friend and I, a Korean American, were denied dessert after we had ordered appetizers, entrees, and a bottle of wine. The owner said that we had already been there for one hour and that there were people waiting. There was no one waiting and there were at least two empty table around us. Also, since when is it not appropriate to spend an hour at a supposedly nice restaurant for dinner? He proceeded to force us out of the restaurant saying that he did not want to hear what we had to say. This has been a humiliating and saddening experience. To think that there are still such ignorant people existing in such a diverse city as New York makes me sick."

yes, the owner was insufferably obnoxious and overly attitudinal. Unpleasant. Worse than that though were the simple pizzas. Having lived in Italy I know Italian wood-fired pizzas. They were a friend of mine. And let me tell you, Celeste's pizzas are not authentic. Not at all bone-fide, especially put up along side, say, Da Ivo's in Rome. Something more on the order of the ubiquitous mall-centric California Pizza Kitchen pizza. My Nepoliatana was overly salty (yes, I know capers and anchovies are, by nature, salty) and the sauce was pedestrian and skimped on. They were utterly unremarkable pizzas. Worse yet, though, was the sewage smell emanating from along side the right-hand wall (as you enter) where we sat. What was that? Two words; don't go.

The owner of this restaurant is terrible and makes dining there unbearable. He is intrusive and rude and goes on and on about his cheese plates. Won't let you enjoy a quiet meal. The restaurant is cramped and the service is mediocre.

Do not do a pick-up here! They not only forgot to mention there were shrimp in the specials but they also neglected to include dishes we ordered and paid for. To top it off they had rude comments about me being flushed when I came to pick up - possibly because I had to run to the ATM as this is cash only and they... surprise surprise... neglected to mention when we ordered over the phone. Just moved to the neighborhood and although the food, that was was correct in the pick up, was alright- never coming back because the service was HORRIBLE. They did not offer to reimburse, they would not bring the correct order and were overall unhelpful. Never again. UGH.

The owner has his head seriously stuffed into his rectum. The food's OK (nothing special, though -- the cozze would have merited a whole extra side plate for the piles of grit they came with), but the way the owner swans around the room, affecting quaintly kitschified southern Italian charm (the overdone "va benes", the simpering hand gestures) and spurning even the most simple request for details about his cheese plate ("I only describe if it's been ordered") speaks of an arrogance that the kitchen frankly doesn't warrant. It's a decent, cheap Italian - but that's no reason for the owner and waiters to pretend they're prima donnas hitting the culinary high Cs. Some call this authenticity; I call it a lack of better options on the Upper West Side.

I will never go back to Celeste. I had been a few times before and had enjoyed each time. The illegal cheese is very good. However, I was recently there with friends and as soon as we decided not to order dessert, they gave us the check and asked us to leave because they needed the table for other customers. It was outrageous! I will never go back. I've never had such a terrible dining experience in my life. It completely ruined my night. Food is good, but not worth the terrible service and rude owner (I know he seems nice at first.). With so many places in the city, you would be better off spending your money elsewhere.

Unbelievably bad service. The wait staff curses at people and seems to make sport on how poorly they can treat people who visit. I enjoyed the food, but it wasn't worth the aggravation of knowing that I was paying a dime to enable the owner and the wait staff to continue treating people like that. We don't need these kinds of places in NY - it is the wrong time for the wrong kind of restaurant. Good luck with your next inspection and your illegally imported foods.

Considering I read the great food reviews here, I was expecting wonderful Italian food. I was really disappointed. The pasta and pizzas are good, made fresh, but nothing to write home about. All the reviews about the service and owner (WHO IS AWFUL) are correct. As a lover of Italian food (and someone who has tried many Italian restaurants in NYC), don't waste your time.

I WAS a regular...the last few times dining here left me feeling like I was being "processed" through, very rushed. Eating three courses with a bottle of wine should mean it's okay to sit for more than 1 hr. This last time, after we said we'd need a few more minutes to order the waiter told us he'd be back in two and we would have to be ready. Then we were told we'd have to leave as the waiter placed the check down without our asking for it (yes, in Europe they place down the bill without your asking, but they don't tell you to leave) . The food isn't so great that it's worth this treatment, there are plenty of other options in the area with better food and better service.
