The poor level of service is what motivated me to register on NYMag.com to write a review for the boat house. The food was good, but the level of service for how much we paid was lacking. I don't care if this is New York and you pay a lot, if I'm paying I want decent service. As the subject says, you can do better for the amount you'll spend. The redeeming quality to this place is the view and the above average food.

Our experience at Boat House Restaurant in Central Park was an unpleasant one. In particular, the general manager did not observe the promises made by other employees. One page contract can include only limited number of agreements. Therefore, we asked several questions to one of the staffs and one of the floor manager. Based on their answers, we planned our wedding reception. None of those promises were observed. First, the trolley service between Metropolitan Museum of Arts and the Boat House was canceled without any notice. Second, the tables were not arranged as promised. Third, the divider between our tables and the rest of the restaurant was not installed. Fourth, the manager forbade playing musical instruments. All these were promised over phone or during our earlier visit, and then were not observed. Surprisingly, instead of apologizing, the general manager insisted that the verbal promises have no meaning and we should not complain. He even indicated that We are not telling the truth. Any couple who do not want unpleasant surprise on their reception day had better to find alternatives to the Boat House Restaurant.

Went there for a birthday dinner with my husband, we had reservations and sat at the bar for about 15 minutes waiting which was fine with us. The food was delicious, from salad through dessert. It is the perfect place to go on a summer night for a special occasion. Of course it is a bit pricey but not unexpected in NY city.

Awful service and below average food

Don't be fooled by the positive reviews -- the service was awful and the food was below average. Despite making a reservation far in advance, our party was seated almost an hour late. Service was disorganized and almost comically slow. Several menu items were unavailable, the meat was dry, and the pastry was bland. Management was rude and took no responsibility for the poor service. This is perhaps the most overrated restaurant in NY.

The brunch buffet at the Boathouse is a surprising and delicious steal ($30 per person and half price for children under 12). French toast with warm berry compote was a big hit with our crowd, as were the fresh fruit and cheese arrays. There's also an omlette station, the full gambit of breakfast meats, pastries and a salad bar. The lakeside view was beautiful, service was pleasant and the wait was reasonably short. Definitely plan to go back again soon!

Coming across the Boathouse on a wet Tuesday lunchtime, having picked up our tickets for the Met that evening was an absolute surprise and a welcome one. The tea rooms are a delight, overlooking as they do the restaurant and then the boating lake. The atmosphere was friendly and welcoming and the food and service excellent. Try the chicken soup by way of a warming treat from the rain and cold. We visited the tea rooms part of the complex on many occasions when we wanted a rest during the day from shopping and sight seeing. At the end of our stay we reserved a table in restaurant for an evening meal and it lived upto all expectations. The waitors were attentive and pleasant and the food superb. The wine was a little on the expensive side but by anyone's standards the overall meal was value for money and of a high standard. The attention to detail did not end when we left the restaurant as their was the Boathouse's own complimentary bus to take us safely out of the park. What a lovely restaurant. I would recommend it to anyone.

The Boathouse is this wonderful secret this is visible to everyone. While many may assume it is a tourist trap, in fact it is a Manhattan gem, populated primarily by citizens who love Central Park. The views are wonderful, the wait staff enthusaistic, and the menu interesting. The food is very good, occasionaly great. While expensive enough to keep tourists away, the value is high. Enjoy.
