Awful service and below average food

Don't be fooled by the positive reviews -- the service was awful and the food was below average. Despite making a reservation far in advance, our party was seated almost an hour late. Service was disorganized and almost comically slow. Several menu items were unavailable, the meat was dry, and the pastry was bland. Management was rude and took no responsibility for the poor service. This is perhaps the most overrated restaurant in NY.

I have always loved the boathouse. Today, after a blissful afternoon in Central Park our group of three went to the Batthouse for dinner- we waited for two hours and patiently on line as 'walk-ins', and the hostess assured us that at 6pm we should be seated. When dinner seating opened at 6pm the hostess was replaced by another front of house who screamt at those waiting, telling us to form new lines despite the fact that we had been instructed to line up elsewhere. Chaos ensued in a battle for 'first-in-line'. The Maitre'd was ineffective, dismissive and rude. There was absolutely no grace or effective system in dealing with the staff's miscommunication to the many people waiting for a table- although we were amongst the first to arrive it was suggested that we join the back of the line. Terrible service and attitude! We lost our appetite and left the restaurant. Nothing is worth the appalling way that all customers were treated today- not even the beautiful view. Disgraceful!

Rude Service and Food Poisoning

I actually registered so that I could write this review. We attended an event at the Boathouse last evening. The food was fine, but the service was terrible. During the dessert course, the waiter forgot to bring one plate out. When my husband politely said "I think you missed one, would you mind bringing me a dessert," the waiter flatly said "no" and walked away. They also gave us coffee cups, but didn't serve coffee. At 3AM, my husband woke up with food poisoning. We all ate the same meal, but he had a scallop cerviche that the rest of us passed on, so I'm guessing that was it. This morning, I called the restaurant to let them know. I VERY politely told the woman who picked up that we had attended a Gala the night before and that my husband had gotten food poisoning. I told her I wanted to let them know in case there were others or they were still serving the bad food to other guests. I was met with a very long pause followed by a "I'll tell the chef." and then was hung up on. I completely understand that we live in a litigious society and that an apology can be seen as an admission of guilt, but it would have been nice to hear a "I'm so sorry" or "Thank you very much for letting us know about this, we'll look into it." I have lived in New York for 20 years and eaten out all over the city from divey little holes to high end spots. I have always been way too lazy to actually write any sort of review, but was motivated by this terrible experience.

Awful place to have Wedding receptions!!!

Our experience at Boat House Restaurant in Central Park was an unpleasant one. In particular, the general manager did not observe the promises made by other employees. One page contract can include only limited number of agreements. Therefore, we asked several questions to one of the staffs and one of the floor manager. Based on their answers, we planned our wedding reception. None of those promises were observed. First, the trolley service between Metropolitan Museum of Arts and the Boat House was canceled without any notice. Second, the tables were not arranged as promised. Third, the divider between our tables and the rest of the restaurant was not installed. Fourth, the manager forbade playing musical instruments. All these were promised over phone or during our earlier visit, and then were not observed. Surprisingly, instead of apologizing, the general manager insisted that the verbal promises have no meaning and we should not complain. He even indicated that We are not telling the truth. Any couple who do not want unpleasant surprise on their reception day had better to find alternatives to the Boat House Restaurant.

I live 3 blocks from the boat house. After a beautiful walk in the park I decided to treat friends to a meal there. We waited an unbearable 45 minutes for food to show up. No one addressed the delay! The waitress avoided eye contact after 30 minutes. I had to finally ask if they could bring food for the child and 6 minutes later all meals came. This restaurant is in the loveliest setting. It is embarrassing that tourists go here and think this is what NY service is alll about. I don't know how they manag to stay in business. Please, the management wears earpieces. My bet is they are hooked up to nothing! And I don't know how the hostess stands where she does and has to smell the dirty swill from the bar.. Honestly a little bleach might help the awful stench. It's quite sad they can't do better here.

I was treated like a tourist in my own city

I don't often venture into the more touristy restaurants in NYC where I live. I had a Monday off on a gorgeous spring day and decided to take a solo stroll to see the park. I stumbled upon the Boathouse quite hungry, treated myself to lunch with a heirloom tomato salad and a glass of wine. All fine. What I didn't like was the fact that I felt very ignored by most of the attending staff - the hostess and the bartender, specifically. What I mean is that they probably don't get a repeat crowd, so what do they care about being friendly. Really disappointing service.

The poor level of service is what motivated me to register on NYMag.com to write a review for the boat house. The food was good, but the level of service for how much we paid was lacking. I don't care if this is New York and you pay a lot, if I'm paying I want decent service. As the subject says, you can do better for the amount you'll spend. The redeeming quality to this place is the view and the above average food.

The Boathouse is this wonderful secret this is visible to everyone. While many may assume it is a tourist trap, in fact it is a Manhattan gem, populated primarily by citizens who love Central Park. The views are wonderful, the wait staff enthusaistic, and the menu interesting. The food is very good, occasionaly great. While expensive enough to keep tourists away, the value is high. Enjoy.

top-drawer brunching!

The brunch buffet at the Boathouse is a surprising and delicious steal ($30 per person and half price for children under 12). French toast with warm berry compote was a big hit with our crowd, as were the fresh fruit and cheese arrays. There's also an omlette station, the full gambit of breakfast meats, pastries and a salad bar. The lakeside view was beautiful, service was pleasant and the wait was reasonably short. Definitely plan to go back again soon!
