It was our first time to dine at Cesca. From the street as we went in we saw a bustling bar and lounge area. We really enjoyed that the crowd was a great mix of mostly people like 30 to 50. Everyone was enjoying a glass of wine, the music was upbeat and not too loud and people had smiles on their faces which sets a nice tone when entering. The greeter was very polite and seated us at our table (we made a reservation). We had some wine and 2 choices from the “Formaggi e Salumi” as an appetizer. We share a grilled Octopus (soooo good) and I went with a Prime Rib which was perfectly done and my girlfriend had the Tagliatelle Bolognese which she loved. Finished with a dessert that was unreal and coffee. Loved every minute of this! We are going back late December with a group of friends. Looking forward to it. Totally worth it.

We went with some some ou of town visotors and we were all very disapointed. Firstly, there was a long wait. Secondly, the food was mediocre and , thirdly, we had to yell at each other all evening. Avoid. Especially if you would like to talk to the person you are with. It has a nice polished yuppie exterior - but, honestly, there is no excuse for mediocre food in NY.

Expensive but good food

I like the dim lighting and high-backed seating in the dining room, and the front bar has a wine-bar type feel and would be great for a drink and small bites. I've been twice for dinner and really enjoyed it both times. The raw fish appetizers are creative and fresh, the burrata was fantastic, and I also really liked the wood-roasted egg on their restaurant week menu. They do a great job with seafood, though I think I was the only one at my table really excited about the whole roasted lamb special they do some nights. It is very expensive, and I can't say there aren't cheaper Italian spots that are just as good, but I still recommend 'Cesca for the consistently good food, service, and atmosphere.

Even if you're a regular, they don't keep a database of where you prefer to sit. Extremely hostile greeters. $7.00 for a doulble espresso is quite greedy, plus they're usually out of wines that cost less that $14. If you want friendly, don't go. If you want a good deal, don''t go. Only go there if you want abuse!!

Failure on Every Level

"Steers clear of trends..." You can say THAT again, Carolyn, seeing how the trend today errs towards a monastic devotion to regional Italian cooking methods and ingredients. 'Cesca offers wines that are too warm, cheeses that are too cold, super-market grade salume, and heaping piles of mediocre, Americanized pastas you'd never find in any region of Italy but certainly find in a Long Island or New Jersey suburb. And they expect you to pay top dollar for it. With the explosion of focused, true-to-form regional Italian restos in Manhattan, this place is stubbornly resigned to the dark ages of Italian American cuisine yet has the audacity to call itself a Southern Italian restaurant. 'Cesca tried 7 years ago to be a culinary destination and has obviously given up. A failure on every level.

I went to 'Cesca last week and I have been going there for years. I love the warm inviting atmosphere and the food is the best it has ever been. I am thrilled that 'Cesca is consistently busy especially in this economy. I just discovered that they are offering ALL of the wine from their extensive wine list at half price on Mondays and they have a great deal on their pre-theatre menu before 6:30.
