This place is amazing. I am so glad that it is here. The selection of Bourbon by the glass is immense. The two size options are considerate. The food is delicious. It just wins.

After reading favorable reviews on nymag.com, my girlfriend and I went to check out Char No. 4. We were excited and ready for delicious food and bourbon. We arrived, had a couple of drinks at the bar waiting for a table, and ultimately decided to sit at the bar (lucky, because the bartender was the best part of the experience -- he's a great asset). We had the pork nuggets (meh), cheddar curds (good, though the dip wasn't), chopped pork sandwich (sub-par, save the pickled peppers and onions, which were excellent), and cauliflower gratin (meh). We were disappointed, and became moreso when we both got sick later that night. We called the next morning to tell the folks at the restaurant that we had gotten ill and were blown off completely. No offer to set things right -- instead, the woman who answered the phone said "oh, yeah, the pork sandwich is really heavy -- I can't even eat it" and hung up. I eat BBQ regularly and know the full pork feeling; this was not it. (incidentally: http://www.yelp.com/biz/char-no-4-brooklyn#hrid:ZP8fDeK051iAA_qwgxVi0w). Not good -- won't go back.

We recently organized a whiskey tasting at Char for a friend's birthday, and the experience was wonderful. A group of 12 people tasted five whiskies for a very reasonable price. The owner, Sean, was incredibly personable and talked us through the tasting and taught us so much about types of whiskey. The food was also wonderful. Cheese curds, potatoes, and the cauliflower were amazing. We all live in Manhattan, but we will definitely return to Char.

Maybe they forgot their cost on the bourbons, but this place is crazy overpriced. While most that I recognized were slightly above average, there were a number of bourbons on the menu where the cost of a glass exceeded half the price of a bottle. Their JWBI clocks in at 4.04 - higher than the Four Seasons! And in what must have been a mistake, you could actually purchase a bottle of one rye for less than the cost of a pour. Maybe these are just kinks they need to work out, but I won't be doing much drinking there in the meantime. On the other hand, the food was good.

Really enjoyed dinner here. Tasty food, great service. There is a wood-burning smell permeating the dining room (they cure their own bacon), but it didn't bother me. For photos go to: www.eatbrooklynfood.blogspot.com and click on "Char No.4".
