My beau and I headed out to Chestnut for our Anniversary and couldn't have had a more wonderful experience. We opted for the tasting menu with wine pairings. The food was obviously prepared with great love and with fresh, delicious ingredients. Each course was creative and attractively plated. Rarely were main ingredients repeated, however, each course led into the next very smoothly. By the end we were both sated and sufficiently tipsy from the generous wine pairings, which were PERFECT for each course. Overall I would say ignore the bad reviews. "Chestnut" is a gem and better than many restaurants in which I have dined in Manhattan. I wish them nothing but success.

went for dinner last night with my husband. had a reservation for dining room, but opted for the bar once we got there - so much cozier. the bartender - shauna - was so helpful and loved talking about the food/wine/cocktails as much as we did. she made me a special cocktail at my request using their pickled tomatillos, vodka, and tabasco. food was incredible and an amazing deal ($30 for 3 courses). the menu listed here is outdated and a few of the things we had aren't listed. we had chicken liver mousse with radish slaw and prunes and grilled calamari with quinoa and romesco to start, pork chop with escarole and rabbit and ricotta cannelloni for entrees, ice cream (pumpkin seed and mexican chocolate were sooo good) and some chocolate/peanut butter warm and gooey thing. all in all, a terrific dinner. thanks chestnut!

Chestnut is a real gem on Smith Street

This is one of my favorite eateries on Smith Street. I have been to this establishment several times and have alternated between eating in their very cozy, bar area, as well as in the dining room. Both have provided me and my fellow diners with excellent experiences. The bar at Chestnut is very inviting. It reminds me of an old federal-style tavern from the 1800s. The entire area is covered in dark wood. The bar is somewhat rustic looking. But the bar tenders produce some great cocktails for patrons to enjoy as they nibble on succulent small dishes such as the Duck confit roll or the Salt cod brandade, crostini & greens or the Chicken liver mousse, prunes, shallot & toast. All great ways to kick off the evening as you sit back and enjoy a nice cocktail, scotch or glass of wine. If you choose to have a more formal dining experience you are in for a treat. Like the bar, the dining room is just as inviting and comfortable. The choices on the menu range from a couple of pasta dishes, to seafood (the monk fish is wonderful), to meats - including a phenomenal smoked pork chop with cabbage. If you want to splurge a little, I highly recommend the Chef's tasting menu. It is a wonderful parade of small dishes both on the menu and off the menu which are paired perfectly with flights of wine. What I love about Chestnut is obviously the food and great service. But more importantly, I really appreciate their consistency in terms of the quality of the food and service.

Went there a few weeks ago with my husband and sat in the bar area. Cozy and warm on a cold winter's night, there were plenty of tables and we were able to spread out a little on soft cushions with a nice view of Smith Street. The brandade was wonderful, the chicken cooked to perfection and the wine selection reasonable and varied. Oh! And did I mention the homemade pickles and fabulous bread and olive oil that they serve the moment you order a snack? Delish! So, I don't know about brunch or dinner, but if it's great quality, wonderful bar bites and wine you want in a fantastic setting I think this place is one of the highlights on Smith Street.

One of My Favorite Neighborhood Spots (ignore the mixed reviews)

I am mystified as to why this place gets mixed reviews. It is uniformly delicious and the staff was friendly with no attitude. The interior is cozy, rustic and beautiful. I shared two appetizers and the chicken and my date and I loved every single bite. I am very critical so I truly don't understand why this gets mixed reviews.

This is only the second time I've ever left a restaurant after the appetizers and before the dinner is served. It was like the place was running out of steam - no beer on tap (broken), many items on the menu were "out"...we should have known something was up then...but we stayed on...after-all, read some of the review below, it sounds lovely - but we were served the most inedible food I have ever been presented with... The service was lovely but they even looked embarrassed serving the calamari when it smelled that bad. Won't be going back. ever.

We've been to Chestnut for brunch before and loved it, but had a lousy experience this past weekend. Maybe they are having trouble keeping up with the expansion, but the food was pretty blah this time, and the service was terrible. They totally forgot about us -- no check-in to see if our food was ok (once it finally came), no coffee refills, no pastries (which come with brunch), and at the end we had to chase down our server to get the check and then (after an extraordinary wait) to get change. On a side note, the drinks were great -- I'm sure we would have had a second round if we could have tracked someone down to order it from!

Brunched today at Chestnut after reading wonderful things about the restaurant. Food took a long time and my group was quite disappointed. One person ordered poached eggs and was surprised to see that one of her egg yolks was hard-boiled. Another thought her chicken was so-so. Me? My burger, ordered medium rare w/bleu cheese, turned up well done. I was so hungry, I still ate it. What happened to my burger? Oh, it went to the guy who ordered a well-done burger with cheddar cheese. I will not go back.
