OK for the Nursing Home crowd

The service was fine and the ambiance was entertaining. Mais la cuisine, non. I had the Coquilles St. Jacques, where I searched for scallops among the thick white sauce and canned mushrooms. The rice on the side-was it Minute Rice? Boil n Bag? My husband tried the sliced leg of veal which was tasty but paper thin and smothered in gravy. And served with a side of French fries. (Not pommes frites?) The side dish of sauteed creamed spinach looked like it came from the can-can sale at Shop Rite. Very disappointing.

A restaurant for grown-ups who remember all the old French restaurants in the West 40's and 50's. Grand-mere's cuisine is hardy and delightful and the service could not be more professional. After the pre-theatre rush, it's a delight to dawdle over cocktails and pate, then tuck into one of many dishes you can't find anywhere else anymore. A pure pleasure.

Went with 4 other people. This was our second time going there. We split our check five ways, on five credit cards, since there were five of us. The waitress however, came back after we paid, and in front of all the other customers, literally said, "was my service not good, the total tip is only around 12%?" I couldn't believe it, she asked me, as though I knew what everyone else tipped, and why they tipped that amount. First of all, when you take a job that has a tipped wage, you agree that you get some good tips, and some not so good tips. Tipping is always at the discretion of the customer. You don't confront a customer like that. Most importantly, it's just plain rude and self-entitled, especially when you do it in front of other customers. When I showed her my slip, and that I gave a 16.5% tip, she said "well not everyone in your party did." We left the restaurant, shaking our heads, appalled by the blatant and unabashed rudeness. But here's the kicker, she made a mistake and realized that we, in total, had given her the customary 15-16% tip. And she came out the door to catch us, and tried to apologize. None of us were overly impressed with the apology. It was better than not apologizing, that's for sure, but had I thought of it then, I would have marched her back into that tiny dining room, and made her admit to her mistake, and then apologize to everyone else for creating such an uncomfortable scene, for all to see.
