Surprising Change

China Grill has always been a great restaurant, the food is excellent and the service is good. However, they have completely downsized their family portions, while keeping the same prices. I was dissapponited after bringing clients there and having to order an addtional few plates of appetizers and entres, since the portions were much much smaller than in the past. I think they need to be relative to the price you pay since the meals are much smaller and not "family style" as they were in the past.

This is my second time at China Grill and I was just as pleased as the first time. The food is fantastic, great to go in large groups to take advantage of the family style servings. Service was wonderful, the restaurant was a little loud, but not out of control for a Friday night. I love that you can eat out on the patio in nice weather. All in all, great time, great food, great service we will be back.

Good for a group during Restaurant Week

In a nutshell, pricey, with food that's tasty but not mindblowing. Best with a group because dishes are served family-style. A great value for four or more during restaurant week; for usual prices it lacks ambience and dishes lack creativity. My favorite dishes were the lamb spareribs (tasty and tender), salmon, & skirt steak (good marinade). The fabled calamari salad is very tasty but not groundbreaking. There was a bit of a factory feel - I imagined a giant buffet in the kitchen from which they plated many items. The crowd was mostly 20s and predominantly women on this Thursday night. The décor is not cohesive - the bar area is cozy with a lower ceiling, but overall it’s boxy and quite loud. Tall windows in the rear dining room afford a better view. Service was adequate for us. Dishes were served when ready; by the time a dish circulated around the table (eight), another one appeared. Waistaff was attentive to pouring wine and water. They offered bonuses like an extra salad and dessert (2 plates of dessert for 8!) We enjoyed eachother’s company enough that the LONG wait for the check wasn’t too painful.

The Showcase of Jeffrey Chodorow

Prior to his staring role in the television reality program The Restaurant, virtually nobody knew of Jeffrey Chodorow. His claim to fame, and a worthy claim, is the China Grill located on the first floor of the CBS building. One of the first pan-Asian restaurants in NYC, it continues to perform well, and in many case out perform its competitors. Interesting combinations of ingredients, from throughout Asia are presented in large family style servings, ideal for sharing. Unfortunately if only two are dinning, to sample the wide variety of choices requires a major cash outlay, which will sour the overall experience. So go with many friends and enjoy.
