Happy to support neighborhood business, I tried out Ciano one night with a friend. We were long supporters of Beppe and big fans as well. We had not read the rave reviews about Ciano but were hoping for good things. Despite having no reservations, they were willing to seat us in the bar area which was great and actually preferred. Once seated, the server was on a mission to make sure we ordered the most expensive items on the list. Everything was described as "a clean and bright" flavor profile. The plates that arrived were too big for the table in order to fit decoration - not food. We could barely fit glasses with the plates and certainly no bread. The food was OK but certainly not like the review. Any positive experience with the food was overshadowed by the poor service - the meal was beyond rushed. Mid-bite, with plenty left on the plate, an attempt was made to clear our plates - for both the appetizer and the main course. We ended up conversing with the table next to us not only because they were so close but had similar issues with the timing. They actually called the manager over and explained that they had a babysitter for the evening and did not need to get home 45 minutes after they left! We skipped dessert since it seemed like "turning" our table was the server's primary objective, but she actually put her hand on her hip, made a face and told us we were making a mistake. The mistake was Ciano's! Better choices exist - don't waste your time here.

Read mixed reviews before going, lots of good food but bad everything else. Maybe we were lucky, but the whole experience was a homerun... last time we enjoyed a new italian place this much was marea (not saying ciano is as good, but we haven't been as surprised in a long time is the point)... had an 8:30pm Friday reservation, got there five minutes late, seated within the next five minutes, hostess actually gave us a choice of two tables (one of which was a corner so we obviously took that) and that was a first in nyc dining for me. We ate the following: rainbow beet salad, veal meatballs, diver scallops, papperalle w/ duck ragu, boneless rack of lamb... beets were fresh and beautiful, the robiolo cheese it was served with was equally fresh and well proportioned, just the right touch of balsamic, veal meatballs had a nice sear, were slightly dry on the inside, but also very light (the polenta was the real star of this dish), diver scallops were cooked absolutely perfectly, as was the lamb, which ranked w/ any lamb i've had in a nyc restaurant (ordered rare), duck was lost in the ragu, but this tends to happen (i got the appetizer size portion, they offer a larger one, but avoid that) the wine concept, which they pride themselves on, was the only draw back... they like to offer you the chance to have half a bottle of any wine... this leads to the unfortunate circumstance of them pushing already opened bottles... just order a whole bottle and avoid that i'm going back

dinner was excellent and the service was terrfic. i would go back in a NY min. as said above - have the artichoke salad, beets, the oxtail and the duck. only disappointment were the desserts - ice cream though was terrific. i would also recommend going on the early side - you're sure to enjoy it more.

Went on a Friday night with a good friend. We had wanted to go based on the NYTimes review. I didn't realize it had replaced Beppe where I had previously enjoyed a number of good meals. Decor is warm and inviting though somewhat unremarkable. We went with the 5 course tasting menu and were not disappointed. Without any planning we managed to order ten different dishes which definitely enhanced the experience. The highlights were the veal meatballs served with creamy polenta and the crudo which was topped with caviar, both of which were delicious. The duck breast fell a bit flat for me but I suspect that may have been due to the size of the portions, which we were quite large, much larger than we expected for a tasting menu. The highlight I think though is the wine list, which didn't disappoint. The ability to go with half bottles at no up charge meant that we were able to start with something light bodied without breaking the bank. The sommelier helped on that end as well, inquiring as to our tastes, what we planned on eating and budget before making recommendations. The service was attentive to a fault. More than once we marveled at just how many people were scurrying around the dining room. Water and wine glasses were never empty and the staff was very attentive to the pacing of the meal as the night went on giving us time to linger over the last two courses. Overall it was an excellent meal and I would certainly return.

If they show you to the "wine room" for dinner, run! The "wine room" is a shoe box located upstairs from the main dining room, completely "divorced" from the bustling restaurant below filled with pretty young things, except for the same menu and haute prices. The reservationist will make NO mention that YOU could be exiled here when you book; however, the imperious and condescending "gatekeepers" will decide, upon your arrival whether you are chic enough to be seated, e-ven-tu-al-ly, in the main dining room, while you and your BFFs put away a few expensive cocktails at the bar. The "rest" are sent to Siberia, to dine hidden away with those who are affluent (or stooge) enough to pay their high tabs, but are too wrinkled or pedestrian to otherwise be "seen." Having dinner in a graveyard, or at ANY restaurant 50 blocks north, would be more festive. SKIP THIS PLACE if you have a heart that beats, unless, of course, you are on the arm of a six-foot-tall blonde glamazon, under age 30, of either gender.

Smell of smoke is terrible; food is ok, but very pricy. In NYC there are much better choices, even more in the same neighborhood. I definitely did not have a good experience. Not worth going back.

I went here with my family at 7:00pm on a Tuesday. We checked our coats and were seated promptly, that was the best part of the entire experience. When we asked the waitress for a recommendation she suggested nearly everything on the menu. Although, the sommelier seemed very knowledgeable. Service felt rushed, portions were small and overpriced, and wine was cleared before it was finished. When this was mentioned to the waiter it was ignored, no offer of a replacement glass or to take it off the bill...our waitress didn't even acknowledge the complaint. Lastly, the coat check was being run by two incompetent model types. There were 17 people waiting in line and it took almost 20 minutes to retrieve our jackets. Finally, the manager came over and apologized to the group of people standing around saying that the girls were new. Overall, you can get MUCH better service, portions, and prices at numerous places in NYC; ABC Kitchen, Maialino, and Gramercy Tavern are all in the neighborhood.

I celebrated my birthday at Ciano and found the restaurant, staff, food and ambiance excellent. The restaurant has a great old world ambiance and we loved the food. We sat by the beautiful fireplace in the main dining room and spent 2 1/2 hours dining and enjoying the warmth conveyed by a very knowledgeable staff. Loved the wine, meatballs, and pasta. This is a restaurant I will recommend to friends and will return to again and again. Easy to find, easy to park on the street and thoroughly enjoyable.

Sadly this place may be too big for its britches. Showed up promptly on Saturday night for 930p reservation, was asked to wait for 15-20 minutes - "3 tables have paid and are heading out now". After 30 minutes, was told same three tables were still sitting there... no apologies or sympathy. At 45 minutes, GM finally appeared and said "this is New York". Pretty restaurant, but I eat at top NY restaurants all the time... "this is New York" = very poor form. Encourage you to dine elsewhere - "New York" has plenty of fantastic restaurants with less 'tude!

We had Christmas Eve dinner there and everything (and I mean everything) was beyond delicious, from the Lobster, Venison, Oxtail Ravioli, Meatballs, and the Artichoke Salad, etc. Ok now I am hungry. Our hostess, had us in stitches. I will be going back there as soon as I can. This beats Beppe by yards. Romantic dinners, business dinners, parents in town, this restaurant is perfect for those occasions. Cudos!!!!
