Cocotte is where I like to go for brunch when all my favorite places in the neighborhood (Rosewater, Stone Park) are too crowded. Endless cups of nice strong drip coffee and a basket of free coffee cake tide you over till your food arrives. The pricing is a little weird - some dishes, like the pear and gorgonzola salad with walnuts, are tasty but overpriced; others are fine - but don't worry, your grad school friends will be able to find something to eat with a nice high calories-per-dollar ratio. The exposed brick walls and pew-style booths are wonderful. Serving the ice water in those mason jars is a nice touch. Don't ever eat brunch at Belleville or Moutarde if you can get a seat here instead.

Having been there three times in the span of a month, there was just something charming about this place and refreshing in comparison to our dispppointing visit to Moutarde down the street. On the weekends, it's a heavy crowd but not too noisy, and for the most part the service is on their toes. On my second visit, I had the French Onion soup, which was a bit too salty, but then the second course of pork tenderloin was perfectly cooked, coupled with the mashed sweet potatoes and a portbello sauce that delighted my palette. I also recommend the foie gras and the creme brulee, which I cannot leave without enjoying after an overall pleasant dining experience. Pro: Great Creme Brulee, friendly service, welcoming and unpretentious atmosphere Con: Wait staff seemed a litlte unconcerned about a good wine pairing for your meal; also with rustic ambience comes uncomfortable wooden chairs and booths.

Charming and cozy, but nothing truly unique. Food was pretty good, but the service left me frustrated. The waiter seemed to be playing hard-to-get--as in hard to get my check dealt with. A nice, enjoyable spot, but really nothing that I haven't seen before.
