Stay away from the suckling pig! One of my favorite guilty pleasures is the tasty, tender meat of suckling pig. ("guilty" because the animal is slaughtered so young). At Cookshop, they ruined this dish and serve only the guilt. We tried different bites and had to spit it out every time. Had a mushy, raw-like texture and zero flavor. When the waiter asked us how our food was, we politely gave him our candid impression. He seemed understanding and apologetic. The funnel cake we ordered for desert was free...but still had to pay $26 for an inedible entree and left hungry. Thanks.

The food is good, very over hyped for what you get.
The place is very noisy and the wait staff is unprofessional.

I've been to Cookshop a number of times and it has never disappointed. The food is fantastic-each dish is unique. Our most recent visit was with a large group; we had a number of the appetizers-clams, pizza, hominy, fried green tomatoes. All were excellent. The same was true of entrees, and desserts were off the chart excellent.
Unlike the other reviewer, I've always found the service to be attentive without being obtrusive.
Cookshop's atmosphere is relaxed and inviting but still elegant. A great date place. One of my absolute favorites in NY.

We were at Cookshop early this fall on a Sunday night. Noise level was awful. The service was just poor. They really did not know what they were doing. The food at best was fair for the price. This was not a good night

i went to the restaurant weeks ago for dinner with a friend. Everything went okay--no long wait, decent food and service, etc. After a couple of days, when i checked my credit card account, i noticed that my bill was $2 extra...??!!! I called cookshop to check with them (hell...i did bother!) but they never got back to me.

Fresh decor. It was more open and spacious than the pictures on this site show. Our waiter was attentive and funny, not smothering or absent... Food was good, from the salad to dessert. I ordered a salad, a whole fish, and a ginger mango parfait. All delic without all the hullabaloo of fancy smance over the top presentation. Portion size was perfect.
For the price you could have found better in the city, But for me, this place is all about location and comfort. Getting to stretch your legs, take a stroll thru the neighborhood on a lovely night.
I sat inside, but the outside eating area looked beautiful as the sun was setting, the sky was an amazing color of bright deep blue... sigh...
I will definitely go back.

I was excited to try Cookshop but it was really just okay. Service was good, not fabulous, and food was pretty mediocre. Not bad, but not great.

This restaurant is unique in that the service is very good and the food is 100% American style. This kind of "good food and casual elegance" atmosphere is rare in NY and very common in California, Arizona, Washington, basically anywhere out west. Service at CookShop was good, especially for real knowledge of USA wine.
Aside from the really fun corn-nuts, however, the food just could not approach what I'm come to expect in a $30 entree in the city. It was OK I suppose , but $30 is the price threshold where I've come to expect excellent food, not "Suckling Pig" over baked beans that is literally 75% rolled up skin and fat. The sea bass was better, but nothing special. There were only 6 entrees +1 special on the menu, so I felt a little limited in choosing as well. I would be less negative if the prices were 30% lower, but they aren't, and the competition simply outdoes CookShop.

I think this restaurant is a bit over-hyped. The food was good, but nothing to write home about. I think what makes this restaurant stand out is the quality of their ingredients. You can taste the freshness. Otherwise, there was a lack of seasoning when needed and the sauces were a bit over-powering.

Tonight, I went to Cookshop for my 2nd time. The first time I went, our waiter was a bit MIA now & again, but he was great, friendly, and very helpful. However, this evening, our waitress was AWFUL. She seemed to be nice enough at first, but would come tell us some little tidbit about the menu or the specials and then run away while our mouths were left open, hoping to ask a question. Whenever I made eye contact with her, she would run away again, and when bringing the next set of silverware to the table, she reached across the table while we were mid-conversation to hand my steak knife to me directly rather than stepping a few feet over to put it down herself. While I might expect rude & unpleasant service at a fast food restaurant, I'd really like to think that one could expect more from a place like this. If it weren't for the awful service, the experience would have been great.
