Ever noticed that whenever you get someone semi-famous (Tom Colicchio) opening a restaurant you get people lining up around the block to take em own a peg? I don't know if its that no food could possibly live up to the lofty expectations they've built up in their heads or if its just jealousy and basic ill-will but I urge you to ignore the hater reviews. To be clear, a friend and I actually dined at Halfsteak, that's the bar/lounge area at the front that is separated from the main dining room by the bar. Its the same kitchen that serves both though and the menu is very similar, just more small plates/appetizers and half-sized portions. I found it to be the perfect amount of food. I ordered the halfsteak with fries (only $14.50), and simply put, it was exquisite. Perfectly cooked and seasoned, absolutely melt in your mouth tender and the fries were an excellent accompaniment. The restaurant is beautifully designed and the staff are well trained and friendly, there is absolutely nothing not to like here. I highly recommend Halfsteak.

Great decor and location but don't bother spending the money. The food was fine, nothing special, a typical steak joint when it comes to selection and taste. The service is what turned us off. Not engaging, almost rude. At times felt like I was at Outback Steak house. Overall very dissappointing for our last night in NYC and as a huge fan of Tom expecting much more.

Contrary to what the other reviewers said, I had a remarkable experience at Craftsteak. The menu was wholly appealing because of the incredible variety that it offered--from raw bar selections to vegetable side dishes. The Beau Soleil oysters are a great way to kick off the meal, as they are delicately briny and refreshing to the palette. I've tried the foie gras with maple syrup, crispy sweetbreads, and fried bone marrow with porcini mushrooms as appetizers. I've never seen such interesting dishes at classic traditional steakhouses. For a fashionable New York appetite, their steaks are definitely shareable for two. I loved the grass-fed ribeye steak, which was very light-tasting yet still had a buttery texture. Go for the potato puree if you want a decadent and rich side. The mixed lettuces can balance the meal, although there are plenty of veggies to choose from. I would also recommend the mixed mushrooms. Great for family dinners, although must note that it is VERY expensive.

The decor is beautiful and dramatic, the service was pleasant and attentive, but the food fails to measure up. You would expect food with plenty of flair and flavor from a place where you can spend up to $102 for an INDIVIDUAL steak with nothing else included. Our steaks were unremarkable, our whipped potatoes were bland, and both of our seafood appetizers lacked enough flavor to even identify what we were eating. Our plentiful but ordinary onion rings came with 4 fancy sauces, none of which had even the zing of ketchup, which we ended up requesting. With all that blandness you find yourself noticing the fact that the tables are set without salt and pepper. It was like eating during a bad cold. At the prices charged (which can be harder to swallow than a mouthful of gristly sirloin) I think a diner deserves MUCH more. The simple meal for two described above WITHOUT cocktails or dessert came to $154 before tip. I would not have minded if what I got had been roughly on par with what I paid for it.

A nice wonderful corner space in Chelsea/Meatpacking next to my favorite NY spot, Del Posto. The huge wine rack is a visual delight. If you like oysters or are in a big group their service would prove pleasing. For $150 steaks I wouldn't say the service was anything great...not saying it was bad...just that we got our food in a timely manner and it was presented to us.

Visiting NYC we asked our concierge to recommend a steak/seafood restaurant.....it was Craftsteak. We were a party of 5 adults eager to spend a wonderful evening. The ambiance was good, service impeccable. The menu was lengthy and difficult to decipher with too many steak choices (grass fed, corn fed, aged how many days, bone in or out, from S. Dakota, Hawaii, etc)....confused, our 2 men did order steaks. The Prix-Fixed menu appealed to the 3 women. With each item a la carte we, too, ordered steaks along with a variety of salads and sides. The menu was difficult to understand so many questions were asked. At the end of the meal we decided that the experience was very disappointing.....too much hype with average results and when the bill arrived we were SHOCKED. In your efforts to set yourself apart you've forgotten about why people really go to a restaurant. Ambiance and service are an essential part of the evening but not a substitute for great food. Your food was anything but great. We won't be going back!
