Chef Boy-ar-dee is alive and well

...and cooking up a storm at Da Silvano. Think thick gooey spaghetti (just like your Irish or German grandmother might boil to death) plopped atop some doctored Ragu. If that's not appetizing try a cold piece of fish bland enough to be served at a hospital. (And the service is about as caring as a weary nurse.) This place is resting on its laurels and the owners percieved status. Just another over-priced and over-rated NY Italian.

The fuscilli with the spicy sausage and peas in a mildly creamy sauce was delicious. The braised Osso Bucco and my wife's white, flaky fish was one of the best entrees i've had since i raved about Fiamma. Absolutley delcious. Sitting outside in 40 degree weather with the heat lamps warming our backs and the wine and food warming our stomachs, mad for a pleasant dinner. Thus, you gotta expect that the bill would be ;arge- and it was. Once in a while, it's worth ckecking out superior Italian in a city that's filled with above avg Italian.

Celebrity gazing outdoes the food

For some reason this restaurant started to attract celebrities, who probably come for the antipasto platters and perhaps to run into other celebrities. It's not cheap and the food isn't as good as other comparably priced restaurants. Dinner might be in the $60 range. Like most downtown restaurants, it's casual and I'd recommend it if you have out of town guests who like to star-gaze.

My boyfriend and I love italian restaurants, we enjoyed the food at Da Silvano, as well as the service. We sat outside which was very nice, and didn't have a problem finding parking. I would recommend this restaurant and definately will go back to eat there again

The food was good. Waiter was slow, and unattentive. Two of us ordered iced tea, which came in a wine glass (with ice, about two sips). We were charged $14.00 for four glasses of iced tea. It wasn't even fresh brewed. Ridiculous.

I ordered the grilled prawns for lunch, and when they arrived, the stench was so overpowering it nearly knocked me out. The people at the table next to us were commenting on how surprised they were I would even be willing to try one bite. After one taste it was inedible- the smell was so fishy and offensive that the odor hung in the air. I discreetly explained to the server (who had the personality of a wet mop) that I was unable to eat them because of the smell and he wordlessly marched off in a huff with my plate. Two minutes later, a man arrived at our table with the offending prawns in hand, informed me loudly that there was nothing wrong with the prawns (he tasted them, he pointed out) and that I would still have to pay for them and disappeared immediately without even identifying himself or giving me a chance to speak. When the bill arrived, I asked to see the manager. The same combative man appeared back at the table and again argued with me and told me I had to pay for the meal even though I'd had no lunch.

The opposite of what I expected: service is great and waiters are very helfpul and don't push for the appetizer/primi/secondi Food is very good: the specials are very fresh and reminds me of Italy. The scene is great as well! If you can afford it, one of the best trattoria in NY!

Food is Mediocre at Best...

...and you can forget about the wine list. The steamed mussels appetizer came out 2 minutes after we ordered it (can you say "not fresh?"). The osso bucco was tender, but rather bland. It was not on top of rissotto - it was RICE. The lobster gnocchi was fishy. The wine list was small and WAY overpriced and very limited. Cross this one off of your list - it's nowhere near the hype it gets. Go to Lupa instead.

Don't waste your time trying to spot celebrities at this much over-hyped Village Italian. The food came 1hr15min after we ordered. Service is deplorable. The veal wasn't cooked properly and when we asked to send it back to the kitchen, the waiter started to argue with us about it. Save your money for another Italian. There are too many good ones to bother with Da Silvano's nonsense.
