We went for the artwork

I enjoyed my meal at Danube. The wienerschnitzel with lingonberries was well cooked; the chocolate souffle reminded me of why I like chocolate. The seafood was fresh, the wine selection as unique as the menu options. Still. . . Maybe it was because Danube is closing this year, but there was little spirit to the restaurant. The couch-seating was a bit shabby, and the waiters seemed tired, distracted, bored. The artwork was lovely--our guest of honor was pleased--and the table was elegant. But no spirit. To be expected, but too bad, because, like I said, I enjoyed my meal at Danube. (Word to the wise: know your audience, if you choose Danube. A steakhouse, it is not.)

best austrian in america

whenever we are in nyc we stop by danube as it has one of the best white wine selections on the east coast. the manager is very accomodating. the only alternative for austrian cuisine would be to go to austria.

Only ok

Food portions were small but amazing, the wiener schnitzel is ok but doesn't fit the restaurant as I have had better and, there was nothing extravagant about but the price. The day boat lobster was very good, as well as the other tasting plates. The wine pairing was sub par and isn't worth the added price. The service was horrible, I was actually insulted by one of the waiters. I couldn't believe the nerve, I sit down to a $400 meal to be insulted. I was afraid to try their sister restaurant Bouley because of it, but in the end I did and it was much better and thankfully I was not insulted, but come to think of it Danube was the first restaurant that had a waiter that openly insulted me.

Not worth the money!

Please,tell me why 2Mich stars?Why? Decor is gorgeous,sevice is attentive(for that price it better be),food-below the average. Appetizers were excellent ,main curse-goulash and duck left us unimpressed.Duck was undercooked and lacked it's savory taste.Goulash- you can do better than this.Also portions are small for a main course.Deserts-were good but nothing special. $500 bill for 3 guests-that's impressive!

debating the 2nd star

I was very excited to visit Danube knowing that it had 2 Mich. stars. However, I am not sure if it is deserving on the second one. Amazing food, amazing decor...service is I think what did it. While it wasn't bad service it was very hands off. The food just appeared at the table (we did the tasting menu) from the bus boys and the head chef only was there to take our order and deliver the check...."announcing" of each course. Also bonus on having a pre dinner and pre desert amuse.

Excellent service and inspired but authentic Austro-Hungarian cuisine

Four of us went to Danube to celebrate the birthday of a genuine Austro-phile. With no expectations other than those derived from Bouley's East of Paris cookbook, we were all exceptionally impressed. The level of service was exemplary. We were well cared for and attended to without so much as a hint of the servers' presence and the food was the best this side of Vienna. We have since returned several times and been equally satisfied.

In sum: Poor bread service, poor water service, dismal limped wines, silly small portions, arrogant serving staff, over priced. Eat around the corner at the sister eatery and taste the diference. Not for those who take their food seriously. May impress your business date from Omaha. Avoid in groups as the extra mandatory tip adds insult to injury.

Abolutely Horrible Service

4 friends in our mid twenties went there for a birthday dinner and we had the most horrible service, these people think they're the best in town and sure enough act like it. The appetizers were great, the main entree so tiny portions (better grab a byte before you go there), dessert was amazing though. But they treat you as like you're not spending enough unless the waitstaff knows you and you arrive in the biggest Limo or you're like in your 70s wearing Oscar de la Renta. Would never go back..our bill was $500 BTW and we made sure to tell the manager on our way out how horrible the service was... he did nothing of course.

Danube is a wonderful restaurant! Start with the Danube cocktail. The food, decor and service are all marvelous!

there is nothing more to say other than danube is a most wonderful experience from top to bottom. no complaints in the least - everything was just perfect.
