Great Food...Poor Service

  • No, I would not go back!

Consistently great food -- ordered for a business meeting through their catering site -- food was more than an hour late! I called several times - no explanation, no apology - I had to request that they call the delivery person while i was on hold. Lost half the people in the meeting as they couldn't wait any longer -- very embarrassing. I'll grab stuff here all day long, but will NEVER rely on them for anything bigger than me ordering a sandwich.

Classic deli. Classic. Freshly made goodness. Roast beef to Chicken parm to Shrimp Parm... wow. All of them are awesome. They need to franchise this place....

I am shocked at "mediocre". I'm going to bet you've only visited once. If so -- GO BACK AGAIN!!! Defontes serves the most awesome amazing heros. I am confident you will rethink your view.

While I know Defonte's has a strong reputation, I was not very impressed with the Pork Hero sandwich. Admittedly it was a good value sandwich, by which I mean it was huge and under $10. Other than that, the Pork Hero sandwich was unimpressive: the pork was bland (have they heard of seasoning?); the eggplant too oily; it needed something acidic to cut the heaviness of the sandwich; and the "hot" salad was so underwhelming, to the point it was useless in the grand scheme of things. Based on this famed sandwich, I can see why this kind of joint is famous with truckies, cops etc, because it does pander to those with a less developed palate -- the sandwich relied on sheer size, and fat, at the expense of flavour and creativity to lure in its strong clientele. If you want a sandwich in this part of town, my suggestion would be to go to 'Wichcraft at 11 E 20th St (at Broadway) and get their excellent gruyere and caramelized onions sandwich, or anything there really. The only redeemable thing about this place were the characters behind the counter - they were lovely, and friendly.
