Delicious but uptight

Why can't top restaurants in NYC relax a little and stop the 'bowing' and gestures of hierarchy. I love great food and the culinary art but i found the environment so stuffy. I don't know if its possible to have both great food (this was) and a more relaxed environment - (i.e.- who needs a napkin to cover the tablecloth if there is one drop of broth that feel from the bowl?)- not our style.. Decor was also dark and overbearing. But despite all of my negativity, the food really was fabulous and i will probably return (until i find a better option)

Del Posto is not just a 5 star culinary experience, but also an entertainment, cultural one. We had the 5 course Prix Fixe with wine pairing. It worth every penny! The food was exquisite, including the presentation. I especially recommend theTruffled BEEF Carne and the Cruda Spiced DUCK . The Dolci-MELANZANE e Cioccolato alla Napoletana & theChocolate Ricotta TORTINO where absolute divine. If the palate was not "entertained" enough, we had the best experience of a well trained staff, from the hostess, to our Captain/waitress and the multi knowledgeable sommeliers (2 of them). It was all together one of the most enriching experiences we had, from a culinary and entertaining perspective. All in all, I recommend Del Posto wholeheartedly, especially if you want to impress your special someone. Go, just go! You owe it to yourself and your s/o.

Pretentious, non-NYC experience

Our worst decision during our wonderful experience to live in NYC was to go to this restaurant on our last night. Pretentious service, wanna-be Michelin-star restaurant attitude with below average food quality with Michelin-star prices. The pastas were fine (the veal agnelotti really good), the rest simply poor. For this menu to pay 115$ is a joke. We felt sorry for our Asian lead waitress who was trying so hard that it was embarassing. She would go on and on with her learnt text, which was miserable to listen. But we were the ones who made the biggest mistake - not to leave right away when we felt what was coming...

This is a beautiful restaurant so you should stop in and take a walk around. But, sadly, that is the high point of the evening. I went there last week with a group of seven and the experience was so bad on so many levels. The waiter was an older gentleman who could barely speak in a whisper. After asking him to repeat himself multiple times, we eventually gave up and just nodded in agreement to whatever he said. The appetizers were pretty good but the entrees were shockingly bad. We never had bad lobster before! They smoked it or put some type of seasoning that made it inedible. The stuffed veal chop was cold and fatty. The desserts, and we never got the names of them because of the whisperer, were nothing special and lastly, the sommelier pushed the owners wine which is overpriced and just not very good. All in all, one of the worst dining experiences ever. Sorry.

we've been to most of the Batali/Bastianich locations. The food is always terrific. THIS was a birthday and THE EXPERIENCE really felt special. i have not ONE complaint... i grew up in manhattan with family in the restaurant operations business. i know how difficult it is to maintain reliability. del posto is now firing on all cylinders. I can't think of a more pleasant evening.

I took my boyfriend to Del Posto for his birthday a couple of days before Christmas, the large dining room was basically empty despite me not being able to get an earlier reservation. We are both foodies and Batalli lovers, died over how amazing Babbo was, so we were really looking forward to a great meal. I could not be any more disappointed!!! We were seated at a corner table by the bar, the area was completely unappealing and might I add there was a cold draft coming in from the vents. The waiter and the rest of the wait staff were so uptight it made you feel completely uncomfotable. The worst part of all of this is the food was terrible. I ordered the autumn vegetable plate to start. The plate tasted and looked tlike the vegetables were taken out of the garbage and thrown onto my plate. The lobster fra diavlo was also pretty terrible. The lobster was chewy and the fra diavlo wasn't even spicy. The pasta's were descent, and I am saying that because compared to everything else they were a step up. All in all the night was a complete bust. I would NOT recommend going here for an occasion, maybe and I say maybe for a work event with other uptight and stuffy people. Disappointed in Batalli on so many levels.

Good, but this is my least favorite of all of Mario Batali's New York eateries. Del Posto is large in scale but small in quality. The food is from Batali so of course it meets a certain standard, but my recommendation would be save the time and money and wait it out for a table at Babbo.

Good but not great

The place is refined, spacious and beautiful. The food does not live up to the expectations of an iron chef. It is good but not great, which is what I expected from Mario. Portions are slightly on the minuscule side. Antipasti and appetizers are just "good". The main course was veal with an ossobuco sauce. The veal was tasteless and the sauce was nice but lacked depth and body. Service was good but sluggish. The maitre did not seem knowledgeable of the dishes and seemed to recite recipes from notes. After my meal I could not recall a single taste in the variety of foods eaten that would become a tasty memory. My take is that it not up to par with the best of NYC and you can get better food at a decent trattoria in Italy.

Fussy and Soulless

Couldn't agree more with Platt's review. The food was very good (though portions too small) but it is just not a convincing 4 star environment. The service is fussy but somehow not particularly helpful. The sommelier was exactly what they are supposed not to be: rushed, not correctly reading (or intentionally ignoring) my cues on price, not explanatory, just pointing out random bottles in a range I already explained was too high. The waiter -- to be blunt -- couldn't speak English very clearly and really just seemed like a very uxurious bus boy. It's as if Batali got the impression that in order to create a 4 star experience, he needed to drain everyone and everything of personality -- so long as the bathroom signs (absurdly) are in Italian as well as English. It kind of feels like Vegas in there. I'd much rather cram in at Lupa, unbutton my collar and just have a great meal and a good time.
