disappointment not unlike plopping into a couch that's been collecting farts since the 1960s

i live near donovan's and just visited for the last time. the other times were ok, and i like the divey atmosphere. but i'm done with this place now. i've had the burger twice. it was great, but it's nowhere close to the best in ny. i've had as good or better at many other places who make no similar claim. so: every time i've been here, i've found myself flagging down the bartender while sitting at the bar regardless of crowd size for around 10 minutes after my drink was empty. i've worked in bars, and know that workers can relax when it's slow. but it's protocol to check frequently regardless. so here's the other bummer, and it sounds picky. i was in the mood for buffalo wings. i first hit saints and sinners, which has good wings, but it was too full. i came here and they had bbq and buffalo wings. ordered buffalo: burnt, not hot, and sauce tasted like bbq. if it ain't ribs, i'm not doing bbq. don't like it. on asking, bartender said sauce was a "bbq base". so they're not buffalo wings at all. just tell me it's bbq!! i wouldn't have ordered them. i'd have returned them if he'd not immediately turned to watch football far away. i ate them and left annoyed. expectations suck. i shouldn't expect the menu to be accurate, so i guess it's my fault? i heard this place may be closing soon. it's a shame when an old neighborhood place closes, but sometimes things happen for a reason. people have choices, and the workers here are not acting like they care if it stays open.

I have been going to Donovans since I was little, we have had every family function here and the food has always been amazing. The onion soup is the best I have had, service is always good. Anyone who has complaints about this place obviously does not know what good food actually is.

Donovan's is like family - you take the good with the bad and love them for it. My experiences at Donovan's, with an old friend who has been a regular there for many years, have always been cozy and relaxed. Many of the best wait staff are from Ireland, and Donovan's is probably the closest thing New York has to a "local" pub. Thank you, Donovan's, for doing what you do so well.

Let me start out by saying I have been going here for the last 15yrs. During this time I have never been disappointed with a meal. The food overall is very good. The burgers and baked clams are GREAT!! The prices are inexpensive and beat any competing restaurants in the area. The service can be a little slow at times but the atmosphere more than makes up for it and makes it a pleasant wait. So if u want to enjoy a great burger and pint of Guinness go to Donovans and you wont be disappointed.

One Of New York's Worst

Food is horrible. Cold, taste bad, steaks are tough. If you ask for anything special (like well done french fires) they ignore you. A relative of mine insists we go here because the prices are cheap - moderate. But out of the six times I've been there I haven't had anything that was worth buying at the price they charge. Go to Applebees instead. Prices and the food are much better.

After trying Donovan's for the very first time recently, I suffered a bad case of food poisoning...it was horrible. Always wanted to try their burgers and I finally did. But it was probably their baked clams that did it for me. After wondering why after I heard such good things about this place...i found articles of food violations that they were inspected for..two weeks before i went there.
