I used to live on the UES and the first three times I went to DTUT, I loved it. I thought the coffee was amazing and the quiche resplendent. Call it midwestern naivete. I was new to NY and underexposed to the finer points of both. I even thought the beat up chairs were kitschycool and the music was edgy. Riiiight. That was over two years ago. Here's what I've concluded after two years of going there. The chairs are gross and likely unsanitary. The music is offensively loud and makes it hard to talk. The food is mediocre (the quiche, I later learned, is microwaved). The coffee is good, but not amazing (the iced lattes are nearly all ice - cheapskates). But worst of all is the service. Most of the people who work there are nice, but the sloppy guy with the beard was obnoxious two of the ten or so times I went. He was closing early the last night I went there (despite the posted hours) and he actually said "You guys need to wrap it up and get out." Uhm... yea. I got out. And I plan to stay out.
