Skip the "seared" (read "burnt") dumplings . . .

. . .and stick to the steamed, which are fresh and passably flavorful. The steamed pork dumplings were tasty and filled with just the right amount of pork and scallion. The "seared" vegetable dumplings I had were really quite awful as all I could taste was burnt dough. The guy working the counter is none too friendly and was yelling with his friend about how drunk they had gotten the night before and how their bodies hated them. While it's nice to see the women forming the dumplings right before you, the utterly dour looks on their faces will likely cause you to look elsewhere.

The Dumpling Man has reinvented the dumpling! The dumpling wrappers are so tender and each of the different fillings are full of incredible flavor. My favorites are the vegetarian (with tofu & shiitake mushroom) and shrimp, but I also love the chicken and pork too. Of the three dipping sauces, I recently chose the new Cool Monster sauce: the coconut/cucumber combination is great! You can choose between having them steamed or seared. While waiting for your order, it is fun to watch the cooks preparing the dumplings from behind the glass partition. I was shocked to read a review claiming that the person was food poisoned! I have been eating delicious dumplings there every week with my friends from the time they have opened and we have never had any problems. The place is always busy and so the ingredients are always fresh. Perhaps the reviewer put something else in their mouth that was not as pure or pleasant before or after eating at the Dumpling Man?

I decided to try out this new place everyone has been talking about, and once I got there I ordered one of each dumpling flavor, fried. That night I was very sick, and it took me days to recover from food poisoning. After reading another review from here, I am sure it was the chicken dumplings that made me sick. Overall the dumpling were cheap, but lacked in flavor. They were too thick, doughy, and obviously not well cooked!!!

I would highly recommend the vegetable and shrimp dumplings -- extremely flavorful and really filling. However, the chicken dumpling was a little suspect: upon careful examination the meat was not cooked. In fact, it was still pink! Definitely try this restaurant and enjoy the cheap, quick food-- just stay away from the poultry.

Dumping Man was a wonderful surprise on a hot day in Manhattan for three tired shoppers. The menu stand in front of the restaurant with its cute illustrations piqued our interest right away, so we walked down the stairs into a small but immaculate and creatively decorated area where we all ordered combo dishes so we could try all four varieties of dumplings. As we waited, we sat at one of the counters and watched our dumplings being made behind glass panels. Fascinating! All the dumplings tasted great, but I was especially partial to the pork which was terrific with the basilico sauce. For dessert, we shared the red bean snow ice and it cooled us nicely before having to go back out onto the hot street. But what was the most fun was watching the owner crank out the ice shavings on his antique machine. I can't wait to go back and share this treat with more friends!

After a ton of recomendations from friends I finally checked out Dumpling Man and I've been back several times since my first visit. The food is great - the best veggie and pork dumplings I've ever had - I don't generally like vegetarian dumplings much, but these are amazing - not bland or mushy like others I've tasted. I have tried both the steamed and the fried and, though I prefer fried, the steamed are very nicely done. They are firm and not pasty. The mango ice is out-of-this-world and the red bean is good too. You should not miss the tofu salad either - is perfect hot-weather food. There are few other places in the area to get this quality of food at the low prices they have set and I suggest you try it now, before they put them up (which they must be considering because the place is always so busy). Really great value and a smart, comfry space to-boot.

I recently spent a couple of weeks travling in China, and I had learned that all of the dumplings I used to enjoy in New York were not the real things at all. They are always doughy and tastless, disguised often by the heavy sauce. I was delighted to come across Dumpling Man in the middle of the East Village, that offers the thin skinned, hand rolled, fully stuffed REAL DUMPLINGS perhaps better than what I remember tasting in Northern China. Me and my wife had since visited Dumpling Man twice, and the hard working dumpling rapping ladies are quite a scene to watch at the store. It also is a great comfort to know that all of the dumplings we enjoy are hand made fresh right on the premise and surely you can taste every bit of that labor of love. We highly recommend this place. Make sure to try their wonderful seared pork dumplings and the veggie ones.

Dumpling Man serves bad dumplings....

I was very excited when I first browsed the menu outside Dumpling man. However, once I stepped in and ordered a combo of 4 types of dumplings, I knew something was wrong. The several leftover-like fried dumplings that the cashier picked for my combo looked like they had been abused and then left there for a long time. Then he told be that they ran out of shrimp dumplings, and i got a steamed shrimp dumpling instead. At least this one came from a hot bamboo steamer, so I thought this one should be good. I was certainly wrong. Once I sat down and tasted the food, I was very disappointed that all the dumplings were cold. Despite the seemingly highly-skilled people stretching dumpling dough at the counter, the dumpling skin I had was so tough. The fillings tasted ok, but nothing special and you can easily get better quality dumplings in Chinese restaurants. I haven't had a chance to try their mango shaved ice, but since it is very hard to screw that up, I recommend having the dessert rather than the dumplings at Dumpling Man....
