To Be Seen, Not Savored

When you first walk by elmo, you might think the large RESTAURANT sign is a farce, given the presence of a dj, a usually sizeable (gay) crowd at the bar, and the bubbly, beautiful people laughing and imbibing pink drinks. You would be forgiven for such an oversight, as elmo is much more lounge like in both manner and flavor. The food is mediocre: my penne pasta on one occasion was not quite al dente, and my chicken tacos on another were overcooked. The food is an afterthought. Which is entirely the point. Servers are effervescent, if not gorgeous, and the crowd invites you to play the part of a Manhattan socialite, if only for a night. Just don't come hungry.

Pros: Good food, huge space, nice staff, decent prices. Cons: Noisy, noisy, noisy
I would recommend this place.

I found elmo online and went there on a first date. I was expecting pretentious and expensive but was delightfully suprised with the food, service and price. This is a great place for a casual dinner or just drinks. It may come off as a little too trendy to some, but its much better then its hipster neighbor, cafeteria.

Sunday drunk/brunch ritual

Everytime I think of this place I'm reminded of drunken sunday brunches with the girls. You escape Manhattan and are transformed to Miami with great drinks, hot waiters (of course they are gay but still fun eye candy and so fun to talk to), and pretty good food. I will be coming here for years to come with the girlfriends for scandalous stories from the night before until I am forced to leave the city, move to suburbia, and become a Range Rovered soccer mom.

I couldn't figure out these negative reviews then I realised they were written in 2004! If they were true then, Elmo has to win the award for Best Improved in NY. Four of us had a great time. Yes, the music can be loud on the weekend but the vibe was great and incredibly friendly, the staff has to be the most beautiful and nicest in town and the food was a genuinely tasty (smoe of it actualy fantastic) and priced way within our budget. Really fun bar scene as well. We'd go back in a flash.

Annoying environment, below average food

Loud club music and food just don't do well together. The waiters are obviously hired for their looks, either uninterested in serving food or just plain forced enthusiasm. The food was way mediocre. I had the house salad (overly greasy in oil) and the fried chicken, dry. For a $20 main course, I expect real napkins not school-cafeteria-grade papers.

We blew into town, checked into our hotel, walked around the corner, down the street and found an oasis called ELMO. It was a busy Saturday afternoon and we got the last table. We ordered some wine and waited a long time for our dried-out turkey burgers...all the while listening to boys beside us (very close - tables tight together) complain about their meals to their unaffected server. We ordered more wine, took in the surroundings and thanked ELMO for just being. We had a great time!

Decor is Nice, Food is Poor

Take a look at the decor, but by all means, go eat elsewhere. It didn't help that our waiter was flaky and service very slow despite many empty tables. The brunch food didn't live up to descriptions on the menu at all which was disappointing and it tasted like nothing special. Boring overdone eggs as a fake Mexican breakfast, barely any salsa, and toast was extra! Don't need to return, would rather have to wait in line and get a real meal.

This place has never been good for more ambitious items on the menu, but used to have great upscale diner fare making it worth the visit - however, no more!
Portions are now tiny. Fried chicken that used to be big, yummy & buttermilk basted, is now not much more a few measly dry bones.
My meal was $52 incl. tip, and I left unsatisfied & hungry!

The place has a great atmosphere, but the food is little too dineresque without added pizazz. We had great hopes but weren't impressed enough to return.
Their dog biscuit treats and water bowls during warm days, however, keep us coming back.
