Surprised by the other reviews, but it's clearly not for everyone. And why should it be? This is NYC, the customer is not always right and not everyone should get in easily. A speakeasy created for & by the service industry, if you happen to appreciate a dimlit, lowkey but stylish atmosphere with excellent food that's not trying too hard- this is the place. With a true top shelf, mustachioed barbacks and a last call ritual that includes Tom Waits & complimentary chicken soup passed out like communion, you never know who's gracing the next barstool. The crowd is as eclectic as the city itself, and unsurprisingly- pedestrians and wannabes might have more complaints than artists and jetsetters. My new favorite spot.
Great Cocktail Menu!

Employees Only is definitely known for its award-winning cocktails and aperitifs, but it also serves up some delicious meals, like orecchiette (a sausage-filled pasta). It is reasonably priced and the decor evokes a feeling of 1920's prohibition-era, because I believe the place was originally a hidden speakeasy.

All of the dishes I've tried here are excellent, though they seem to be changing frequently. The drinks change as well, but just like the food, they are always thoughtfully prepared and incredible. The service is great and the chef is talented beyond words. Not overpriced, but if you have some extra $$ to spend, you will not be disappointed.
Fabulous food, a bit crowded

I took my family here for my birthday last week on a recommendation from a friend. Luckily we got there early, around 7:30, because as we were leaving at 9 it was jam packed. The cocktail menu is astounding, I don't know why you would order anything but a cocktail. Both of mine were delicious, and there is enough variety to please even the pickiest palates. Our server was fairly attentive, if maybe a little over-worked. She convinced us to try the bone marrow, and we were not disappointed. I heard the oysters were fabulous. I had a pasta and peas dish, it wasn't terribly exciting, and my father's fish was a little bland, but the appetizers did not disappoint, even if the entrees did. I would certainly recommend it for apps and drinks, though maybe skip a full meal. Dessert was heavenly though, oh my word.

I can't have enough of it. The bartenders there are very cool, great service from them, and I get consistent and fantastic drinks. Lately the crowds were questionable (some finance guys had no idea what they were talking about). But I will definitely be back for the drinks!
Great place, but terrible doorman

EO has become more popular over the past year or so and the weekends have become somewhat of a zoo. This is a fantastic place to meet friends for a drink (some of the coolest bartenders in town and they have pretty interesting moustaches) or have brunch/dinner (great menu). I would recommend going during the week to avoid the mess and the doorman, who is probably the only downfall of the place. Surprisingly, management has not realized what he does or says to customers entering the restaurant. Frankly, he is a very mean spirited person and on several occasions has grabbed a few girls. Other than that, this place is pretty legit but you have been warned about the doorman.
Great place for drinks, doorman kills it

I used to be a regular at EO and would frequent the place about 2-3x a week. Didn't have a problem getting past the doorman on weekdays. On the weekend if I brought more than 1 guest, then it was a different story. The place has been getting overly crowded, which makes it tougher for people to get in. On these occasions, the doorman would usually make it difficult for my guests. Tian (door man) is unprofessional, short tempered, ill-mannered, and portrays a bad image for the bar. I have spoken to Henry about this problem, but they choose to turn a blind eye. Having been in the bar business, management should understand that regulars are a bars lifeline, long after the popularity factor goes away. I understand that they are going for an air of exclusivity, but they could do much better than by having a prick regulate the door of this small joint. Other than that, the place is great. Good food, good drinks, good atmosphere inside. Chicken noodle soup at the end of the night is a good nightcap. Too many other places in NY to spend your money.
Waitress could use an attitude adjustment and a calculator

When we first arrived the outside garden was empty, yet the waitress was infuriated that 3 of the 6 of us were running 15 minutes late. I guess we were taking up a table for the phantom people she would have rather served. We immediately ordered a round of drinks and an appetizer. When everyone arrived we ordered an $80 bottle of champagne. As we were about to toast, the waitress comes over, interrupting us and asks us for our order. We asked for some time and she quipped "you know you have a time limit and didn't some of you arrive here late". We were all shocked when we realized she was being dead serious. We then ordered 2 cheese platters, 2 specialty platters, 2 flat breads, other appetizers, a lamb chop entree, and 2 desserts. On top of the champagne we each had 3-4 rounds of cocktails. So if our sweetheart of a waitress lost the attitude and the stop watch and did the math maybe she could have figured out we were spending plenty of money. Place was adorable, food and drinks were good, as for the service - MUCH to be desired.
Not what it used to be

Used to be a great spot for drinks and dinner. Now, service is spotty at best. Pass.
