During a rainy evening in NYC - I was relieved to discover this cozy little restaurant. I was warmly welcomed by the hostess, the bartender, and my waitress. I enjoyed the layout of the restaurant and the gilded mirrors that framed the walls. I ate an amazing Tunisian pasta, which I hope to recreate on my own. The bartender followed up with me to make sure my wine choice was acceptable and took a few minutes to talk about my pick. I appreciated the extra effort and the thoughtfully prepared cuisine on this busy night.

We ordered the brik, which was ok, the couscous with chicken, which was shapeless and atrocious, a lentil salad (ok), and some wine. North African cuisine is very distinct - it is heavy, spicy, and saucy. It is intensely delicious if the ingredients are of high quality. This restaurant liberally applies canned tomato paste and vegetable oil in everything. As a result the food is extremely oily and completely tasteless. The ingredients do not match, and the presentation is below par. On the other hand, the restaurant is clean and smells fantastic, and the staff is polite and accomodating. A great place to take your grandma for a faux culinary adventure, but it is not for the discerning palate.

My colleagues and I were on a trip to NYC and decided to stop at Epices before the opera. The food was great. I had the b'stilla which was delicious and we had the hummus as an appetizer and we had some Napa Merlot. The staff was very attentive without hovering over. We got the dishes in a very reasonable amount of time and were able to be done just in time for the opera. I would go back to that restaurant in a heartbeat.

We arrived at 630 (for an 8:00 concert), and had plenty of time to enjoy a 3 course meal, bottle of wine, and a leisurely stroll to Lincoln Center. Both the lamb stew and beef bourgonoine had very good, and slightly spicy tastes. Recommend placing one order of Brik -- house specialty of tuna and egg in phyllo dough -- (a very large portion) Service was friendly and efficient -- our waiter was attentive and knowledgeable without hovering. A good choice for a reasonable meal by Lincoln Center. (I would bring teenagers but not toddlers).

Four of us went to Epices du Traiteur last night and had a great time. Good food good wine. Immediately upon entering the full restaurant you notice the subtle aroma of spices. Our table was ready for us when we got there, which is not always the case in NYC. The menu has a rich assortment of Mediterranean dishes from North Africa and southern Italy. These ranged from Moroccan Tagine and Tunisian rice to variety of risotto and pasta entres. The wine list had about thirty different wines in a broad range of styles and prices. All of the servings were appropriate, neither too much or too little. The salad dressing in our salads had a base of buttermilk and spices, uncommon but very tasty. The tagine had a very lemony flavor that went well with the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc that accompanied our dinner. The staff was friendly and helpful without being overly attentive. The meals were all delicious. In a neighborhood brimming with good restaurants Epices is to be highly recommended. I will certainly go back.
