Overall a Pleasant Place

Hostess was very pleasant (nice change of pace for the city). Wait staff hovered; too many assigned to one table. Ordered pastry basket and no plates were given. When a space is tight, it is OK for the staff to ask for cup/glass to be moved closer. No need to for the staff to stretch over the whole table as if they are going for the finish line in the 100 meter dash. Restaurant Design: Slightly pretentious but cozy (faux weathered coffee cups were a bit much). Extremely poor choice of bathrooms placement/seating nearby. Some options: remove seating by the bathroom, move bathrooms altogether to a more secluded location and definitely put much better ventilation in the bathrooms. It was disgusting to eat a meal that close to the bathroom. Also, change the windows on the bathrooms door. Windows are opaque but I really do not need to get a blurred glimpse of people taking care of nature. Disgusting! Seating by bathrooms was tight. Cushioned leather seating needs to have a higher back on it. I want to be comfortable at Sunday brunch and not feel like I am posing for school pictures.

Excellent food - atrocious service

Waited 45 minutes for a table that we had reserved, waiters had no idea what they were doing. They actually spilled wine and water on me at different points in the evening. Their apology was " It's white wine so it probably won't stain". Dessert was to be comp'ed - apparently the manager forgot to post the waiter of that...After giving an average tip the waiter had the audacity to come out and follow us on the street and ask for more tip. It's a shame that the food was great. Wait staff needs to learn a few things - makes an excellent chef look bad.

Nothing Special

Perhaps it's what we ordered, but at the end of the meal no one even asked one another how the meal was because we all could tell that everyone felt it was edible, but nothing worth discussing. Not good, not bad. I would not go again, but that's only because there are so many places in the city to try that it makes no sense to go to the same place twice unless it was at least above average.

barely any food on the plate

I tried the EU for dinner after a great brunch experience - but this time, we left hungry and broke. It is clear why the EU is so immaculately decorated -- to distract visitors from the tiny portions, half decent service, and big prices. A foodie myself, I have no problem paying high prices for excellent food in tiny portions. The miniature entress at the EU simply arent even close to great enough to justify $35 a pop. Many of the greatest famous restaurants are priced similarly or even more reasonably! We shared a meat and cheese platter which barely filled up the board, which is ridiculous for nearly $30. My boyfriend ordered the Lamb, which he finished in a minute flat, and left hungry..$35. I had a very salty, boyardee like Paella for $20-something. God forbid you have a few drinks, you leave minus $150 per couple easily for a half way terrible meal. The EU simply failed to compete with the consistenly amazing, totally affordable dining experiences in the surrounding neighborhood. I'd go for a beer to check out the space, but other than that, hit the spots in all directions for a much better experience.

Made to Order

I have been to E.U. before and enjoyed it quite a bit, in fact, their roasted foie gras blew me away last time. However, here is my problem, and E.U is not alone in this, but an offender nonetheless - we HAD to order everything at once. I had ordered a bottle of wine and a charcuterie plate, in hopes of having something to start while we figured out what we might want next (i.e. just stick to tapas and small plates, or apps and an etree). Unfortunately, it is verboten to do so apparently. Instead, they slammed our table with the charcuterie plate and apps at the same time. I understand the need to turn tables, and there is nothing really on the menu that needs to be cooked for an hour before being served so as to tell the chef early on. It's just unneccesary. If you cant just have tapas and small plates that you order as you go along while having wine or beer, then don't put it on the menu.

2 hour wait with reservation

Maybe they still need to work out the "kinks" but regardless I'm not going back. The reason is that we had a reservation was at 8:30 and didn't sit down to eat until 10:30. You might wonder why we bothered to wait that long. It was something called the "airline syndrome." In other words, they told us several times that "it will only be 10 minutes, you are the *next* table!" Then 45 minutes would go by and we were still languishing without a table. We'd query and get another optimistic answer; only to wait another interminable period. A couple times we noticed that other people sat down who weren't there before us. The first time the excuse was that it was a six-top. The second time: "those people talked to the owner." It was appalling! If only they had been honest with us from the start we would have left. In the end I have to say that the wait staff was very nice, but I was so exhausted from the ordeal I never want to see the place again...

TERRIBLE SERVICE MEDIOCRE FOOD

Wanted to try this place in the neighborhood, chose it over In Vino, my favorite spot just to try something different. BIG MISTAKE. We made late resi's but waited an hour and a half to be seated after being told they got swamped right before we came. Whats the point of a reservation then, don't you hold tables!! They seated another table of 4 ahead of us bc they had made reservations as well, ironic isn't it? Completely incompetent hostess who was rude, only good thing was the manager or owner, not sure...tried to ease the pain with some on the house drinks, but truly wasn't worth it. Finally seated and the food was mediocre and regular service was OK. Final blow- they have put through a much higher tip on our Credit Cards for the meal. Could be a mistake, but certainly the icing on the cake. Should have gone to In Vino- don't make the same mistake we did....

Very disappointed...

I have been looking forward to eating at the EU for quite a while. But I have to say i'm thoroughly disappointed and will not be going back. I went last night with three friends and all felt the same - all the food was sub-par and extremely over priced. My steak came out well cooked but barely warm - and the "fingerling potatoes" consisted of several small soggy potato chips resting in some sort of over-salted marinade. My friend's pork chop was 70% bone, fat and gristle. It was garnished with some sort of chewy fried crustacean - and maybe two sprigs of greens. My other friend's branzino was average at best - the only garnish a half lemon. Only afterward did I realize why the waitress kept trying to offer us additional "side" items (a $7 plate of fries) - it would have taken two $30 steaks for me to leave feeling satisfied. We skipped dessert and left to have additional drinks elsehwere. I'll never go back.

They should change the name to "Eee-yew"

Crowds were not a problem when we went (early on a week night). The problem was that every single dish came out tasting essentially the same: greasy and salty. If the vaunted "octopus alla plancha" is indeed grilled and not fried, I'd be willing to eat my hat -- but not, under any circumstances, another bite of poorly trimmed, grease-drenched tentacle, the haunch end rife with surprise mucilaginous bits. The waitress very nicely and knowledgeably described the ornate preparations that go into the gnocchi with guinea hen sugo (apparently the bird is left to age overnight: whatever), but it tasted almost exactly like the octopus -- which is to say tasteless, beyond an impression of oily, over-salted richness. Same goes for the "dirty shorty" -- a short rib sandwich not far removed from a Philly cheesesteak. Luckily, we didn't opt for any further entrees (too shocked by the $24-32 price range: we're in Alphabet City, folks!) The micro-helping of salad that accompanied the shortie was the final blow: it, too, was heavily oiled and salted. Fearing the worst (more of the same), we forswore desserts.

Very disappointing...

After reading some reviews and checking out the menu, I had very high expectations of this place. On Saturday, a group of 8 of us set out for our first E.U. dining experience. As one of our party members said, this place looks great on paper. Unfortunately, it fell incredibly short of our expectations. I will say that the space is good and it has potential. However, the execution was poor. I think we could have gotten past the crappy ipod playlist on throughout the night, had the food been decent. Our first hint should have been the dry as sawdust, wonder bread that was set out. A few of us ordered burgers, of which they had a couple of options that sounded good. Those of us who ordered medium rare burgers, ran the gambit of rare to well done. It's disappointing to have something so simple completely screwed up. Not sure if these other reviews were written by employees, but I live in the area and i don't believe I'll be going back.
