You will only like this place, most likely, if you have actually spent time in South East Asia eating at local joints. The food here is incredibly authentic and great! I hate to say it but most New Yorkers aren't familiar with authentic SE Asian food as 95% of the places in the city are far from authentic and usually run by Chinese that aren't even from the regions their restaurants claim.

My wife and I joined a friend and her friends for a fun night of dining at Fatty Crab recently. We knew going in (thanks to this web site) that (1) Fatty doesnt take reservations, (2) Saturday night would be crowded, meaning (3) we would wait for a table, and once seated our table would be cramped (4). Even with those upfront inconveniences, we had a great time! Our server was extremely helpful for us first-timers, and accommodating to our vegetarian. We ordered WAY too much food - due mainly to other reviewers complaining about portion size. (Hey haters, this aint Chicago - not all dishes need to be deepdish!) The food came out randomly, which was different, but fun. We enjoyed the buns (veg & pork), wings (my wife is a coinsure), mussels, duck, ribs, chicken and the coconut rice that came with most dishes was very good. My only complaint was that because I ate a relatively big lunch (in fear of small portions), and combined with over-ordering, I left a bit too stuffed to savor the experience (thanks for nothing, Fatty Crab bashers!) If you havent been, we recommend!

I ate at this restaurant the tonight, and ordered the Chili Crab. Quite a disappointment to get 5 ultra small blue crab instead of the Dungeoness crab. WasnÂ’t a bit of meat to be found. I think we should have been warned if they're going to make a switch like that.

The key to Fatty Crab is (i) you have to be early and (ii) order the "right" dishes. The real problem is the place is way too small and oncethe restaurant isfull and there is a line, the service suffers and the eating environment becomes stressful. The bad music does not help. But try around 11:30ish for brunch and 6:30pm for dinner and all the problems disappear. In terms of what to eat, I would agree that the crab is overhyped. Avoid it if you are from Southeast Asia, you are bound to be disappointed - it is far from the real thing. But if not, its a very different preparation from the insipid mayo/creamy combos presented at Western restaurants so you may actually enjoy it - most of my friends love the slightly spicy tomato based sauce. And the grilled skate on banana leaf is to die for - it is my favorite dish at Fatty Crab. Other highlights include the mussles, pork ribs, vege with salt fish, kangkung belacan and the pork steam buns. Value for money this is not but its not absurdly expensive either.

We should have known after the waitress smugly denied us simple lemon wedges for our water that we were in for a ride... The quail eggs were odorous and slimy, the spicy fish soup infected everything else with its stench and the fatty sliders were such a mish-mosh of meat that even the biggest carnivore would turn it down. The fatty duck was the only delicious thing on the menu, but was sadly eclipsed by the surrounding over-hyped and over-priced dishes. And while the judgmental waitress emphasized time and time again that the food is "authentic" we had to suffer through a blaring soundtrack made for a New Jersey arcade that detracted greatly from the ambiance. In summation: Avoid!

In one word: Disappointing. The portions were miniscule, but not the prices. The food tasted okay, but the undercooked egg included in each dish spoiled it for me. The music was too "hipster" and too loud. If forced to go back, I would not order the chile crab again. Never had one before, but I was unimpressed. 10$ for a 12oz beer??? The atmosphere was okay, but it is very tight and crowded. They have a lot of people working in there given the small number of seats, but the service was only average. Over $50 each and left hungry! AVOID.

What is all the fuss in NY magazine about this joint. The food was really bad. I am not trying to be cruel or anything but it really was not good. Besides the fact the portions were ridiculous for the price, everything tasted the same, it was spicy in a very bland way. I don't understand it and I LOVE malaysian food. Very disappointed!

Went at a quite period and seriously impressed with food and friendly, helpful service. Fatty duck was tasty and Grouper was excellent. Good selection of wines and beers.

Went to Fatty Crab 11/9 and the food was lousy. The place is definitely borderline clean - we saw a waiter clear a table next to ours, but leave the dirty water glasses. Yikes. I ordered a glass of wine and I received what I considered to be a thimble-full. The portions are teeny tiny and the flavors of the food all seemed the same. The chicken wings and ribs had the same, mysterious, slightly burned sauce and the quail egg shooters had something resembling fish food on top of the them. Avoid.

I went with a friend to fatty crab. The food was very good although not nearly as firey hot as reviews suggested. Some people will probably be dissapointed at the tameness of the flavors. What we found to be disappointing was the portion size of everything as related to the prices. We left hungry after each paying $38.00 for our meal- we shared the chili crab, the checken leg appetizer, and the squid salad, and a large asahi, all delicious but too small portions. Also, desert seems to have been elimated from the menu to make for faster table turnover
