Terrible and greasy.
By mrlithe on 8/7/2008
I'll admit, I got pick-up, but I was so disappointed. Everything- EVERYTHING, was coated in a layer of grease and oil. By the time we got the bottom four inches of the bad were soaking wet. The pulled pork was flavorless and greasy. The boneless ribs were bland and oil slicked, even the brocoli salad was glistening with grease. The only saving grace was the sausage. Those pickles they rave about? Yes, they are half sour, they also only half taste like pickles, but if you love cucumbers, you'll love them. Even the side sauces were bad, the mustard was pretty much like eating straight wasabi and the bbq sauce had a dirty flavor akin to something under your fingernails. Sorry to be harsh, but this place is way overhyped. Here's hoping better BBQ moves into the hood.
Overhype must sell these days

This place was terrible. First I'll start with the service. I asked for two chops and the idiot girl says " I'll think I'll give you just one they're pretty big"- um, I asked for two. You're taking money out of your owner's pocket. Then the food was horible. Very bland. that's not barbeque. The sauce was horrible. You could not really smell the food- which is key to any good place. To top it off, employee after employee went outside to smoke and then returned to serve without washing thier hands..nasty. Over-hyped.
Over-hyped BBQ spot

I get the garage distressed and unsophisticated look. I dont get the long wait for dried and chewy BBQ that is supposed to be good and simply not. IMHO it gets mention for its beer selection and its sausage. You almost want to love the place bc it does have an unsentimental romantic way about it. It lured me back a couple more times as I felt I may have had a bad previous experience. Wrong each time. Someone tell the owner to learn the proper way to smoke meats and expedite a line.
Smells good, but leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

First off, this place is poorly run. Got in line at 7:45, but the time we made it to the counter, 45 minutes later, they were out of most of the food we wanted. We ended up getting the flank steak (overcooked & dried out) bacon (pure fat) brisket (dried out except for the fat) and baked beans (the only edible thing there) I don't understand why people think this place is that good. Is it because BBQ is rare in NYC and people will eat anything and think its good? Being born and raised outside of Memphis, I can tell you its not that good. Overpriced fatty meats and long lines to get slim pickins of food. Service was bad too.
Way past its prime

Fette Sau has been resting on its laurels, and it shows. The laurels were once deserved: the cue was delicious; the sides less so, but adequate. Now, the meats are dried out, and the sides barely passable. But the worst, by far, is the service. "Surly" doesn't begin to tell the story. I'd go with "rude." For masochists only (who are no doubt plentiful in Billyburg).
so over it

I'm so over this place. It used to be good, but now too many people know about it, and you have to wait 30-45 minutes in line on a Wednesday(!) just to get some pork. My past few deliveries from here have arrived cold, the meat has been sub-par, and tonight, when I called for delivery, the girl on the other end was incredibly rude. After having me on hold for several minutes, she comes back to take my phone number, tells me I have to yell it at her because she can't hear, is talking to other people while I'm yelling my number, and then proceeds to get it completely wrong. This repeats, and then, all of a sudden, she starts shouting "hello? hello?" over and over and I'm shouting it back, and then I get hung up on. She had my correct number at this point, but didn't try to call back. Sorry Fette Sau, but you are not good enough for your pretentious attitude. Can't wait until Pies and Thighs comes back!

Read about this place and had high expectations. Got the pork sausage, pulled pork, beef belly, Mac n cheese, and potato salad. Pulled pork was pretty good. Mac n cheese was tasty. The others were ok. Service though was horrible. The guy who took our order said they were out of ribs. After we started eating, we saw a group near us with ribs! The guy could have told us they were out of ribs at the moment and that more would be ready shortly. The cashier and bartender had such a nasty attitude. Would I go back? Not for mediocre BBQ and bad service.
How not to run a reastaurant.

Positives: the ribs were good, the brisket was good (did not provoke memories of Texas, Memphis, NC or L.C.'s in Kansas City) The sides are pretty dull. The service set up is clumsey and inefficient, a really bad way to start off a meal. Service people flustered and confused, no one seemed to know what they were doing. One guy weighs the food and two people watched. Nowhere to sit so we took it home. Possible spot for beer hang out in good weather. There is an ample outdoor space, not open when I was there. Duh. Lunch might be a good idea. Revamp that dumb service set up and hire someone who has worked in a restaurant before and maybe. Fette Sau has good potential but right now, OK food, overpriced, lousy service.
Quite the Surprise...But Hardly a Good One

Given the gushing reviews, I might have expected too much from Fette Sau. But then again my only expectation was for the food to be tasty, so what gives? If I had to go back, I'd look forward to the great bourbon selection, laid-back casual atmosphere, the hip but not pretentious decor, good service, and open communal setting. But it's unlikely I will go back due to the tiny food menu, so-so bbq sauce, and the worst ribs I've ever eaten. When I ask for ribs, I want ribs. Not an overpriced, overcooked slab of what turned out to be mostly inedible animal fat, not meat. The mediocre sauerkraut wasn't much of a consolation.
from good to bad and worse

loved this place when it first opened despite the long wait for food & a table. something has changed and i'm not sure why. two weeks ago they ran out of ribs on a friday at 6:45pm. last week the wait for food was ridiculous! the place was empty and i was taking it to go. they only have one person at the counter who is on his own time. when i did get the ribs they were all fat and grease, no flavor or meat. i kid you not, this place is not worth the effort which is too bad cause beer and potato salad rock.
