Smells good, but leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

First off, this place is poorly run. Got in line at 7:45, but the time we made it to the counter, 45 minutes later, they were out of most of the food we wanted. We ended up getting the flank steak (overcooked & dried out) bacon (pure fat) brisket (dried out except for the fat) and baked beans (the only edible thing there) I don't understand why people think this place is that good. Is it because BBQ is rare in NYC and people will eat anything and think its good? Being born and raised outside of Memphis, I can tell you its not that good. Overpriced fatty meats and long lines to get slim pickins of food. Service was bad too.

For a Sunday dinner we arrived at 6ish. The place was busy but we found a table with no wait. The line, not too bad. I love the feel of the place. The food gets a mixed review but I like it lots overall. Sausage,great. Ribs also great, Pork Shoulder kind of bland. The red sauce is pretty fabulous. Beans yummy, potato salad an undercooked failure, broccoli ok, beers great tasty selection. I look forward to coming back and trying some other stuff but the sides need work. Where is the corn bread? In the end we were a happy well fed bunch and didn't spend very much either. Do try it yourself.....
How not to run a reastaurant.

Positives: the ribs were good, the brisket was good (did not provoke memories of Texas, Memphis, NC or L.C.'s in Kansas City) The sides are pretty dull. The service set up is clumsey and inefficient, a really bad way to start off a meal. Service people flustered and confused, no one seemed to know what they were doing. One guy weighs the food and two people watched. Nowhere to sit so we took it home. Possible spot for beer hang out in good weather. There is an ample outdoor space, not open when I was there. Duh. Lunch might be a good idea. Revamp that dumb service set up and hire someone who has worked in a restaurant before and maybe. Fette Sau has good potential but right now, OK food, overpriced, lousy service.

...this place is a serious contender. the line is long, service is slow and the picnic style seating is limited, but this is a smokehouse, not the four seasons. we had a party of four that arrived around 7:30/7:45 and there was about a 10 minute wait in line (on a friday night!). i must confess, we were drinking beer across the street and keeping an eye on the crowd before arriving. as we waited for our order (flank steak, slab of ribs, pulled pork), one in our party slipped over to the bar area for one of their whiskeys on tap. we skipped out on the in-house dining, opting for our apartment a few blocks away and feasted on the kitchen table. the meats were smoked to tender perfection; the dry rub is very smoky and spicy, but not over-powering. their sauce sucks, so bring you own and the sides are nothing to write home about...but the main attraction is worth the wait.

One thing you must know and be ready before you go is this place is a smokehouse. There will be a line, we arrived around eight on a tuesday night and waited behind five or six people. There was a steady stream of people, be ready to share a big pine picnic table. You walk up and order your meat and sides, they are weighed out on a tray in front of you. Four of us split a rack of ribs (pork), 1/2 lb pulled pork, 1/4 lb pork belly, some baked beans, and potato salad. The hot sauce has a nice chipolte smokey flavor but was a bit hot for our taste but mixed with their sweeter sauce was great. The rub is very spicy with hints of coffee, paprika, and cyanne pepper. The beans were nice and smokey, think I would skip the potato salad next time. Admitedly I am a huge pork fan - I have a website www.iluvpork.com. I think this restaurant is great and definitely plan on going back.

The ribs were worth the trip. Both the pulled pork shoulder and lamb lacked distinction and were served cold. The sauce was too sweet for my tastes and equal to bottle varieties. Nice beer selection sold in imperial volumes. While rustic and seemingly child friendly the overwhelming clientele of hungover twenty-somethings were anoyed by my two year-old. The menu is true to pit style roadhouses and welcomely fills a void in NYC. This joint is not Cooper's, but I'm grateful for that.
Northerners just don't know BBQ

The SALT LICK metal door these guys have inside the restaurant is about the only thing that's paying homage to real BBQ about this place. Sure the decor and beer taps are super cool (each tap is a different knife, boner or tenderizer) and the bourbon is the stuff of gods, but the food, you just have to pass on. When it comes to BBQ, the veggies shouldn't get cold within 5 minutes of seating, the pork belly should never be undercooked and the ribs should fall from the bone. And no signature pulled pork sandwich!? Definitely NOT impressed. And only spicy BBQ sauce on the tables? With all their pork belly boasting, they completely neglected a tangy South Carolina vinegar sauce! Great atmosphere, great employees, great customers, but once again New York has shown how important style is before taste. Come on people, just cause it smells like BBQ and looks like BBQ doesn't mean it's BBQ. Try Dinosaur up in Harlem or just you wait til you get to Tennessee....

it has been a long time coming to finally have such a treat in the neighborhood. Fette Sau has a great vibe from the moment you walk in the door. The place wreaks of awesomesauce. I was totally impressed with the burbon selection. i would recommend getting there early, especially on a weekend since the demand outweighs the supply, as is usually the case with amazing BBQ places. The food is quite good, especially the ribs and the pulled pork. I would definately go again, but next time i will go on a weeknight when it's not so packed.

this place is a 10, 10, 10. spell it any way you like... a most impressive selection of barbeque. the line wasn't so bad when i went and the food was awesome. we got a gallon of beer to wash it down... what a selection. amazing bar, amazing food, amazing scene... what more can you ask for... this place kicks (boston) butt.

coming from the south, people feel like no Q is as good as their Q. fette sau puts those folks in place. my coming from the south and a town where there is a fairly famous bbq challenge every year, i feel like i understand and appreciate the art of smoke better than maybe some yankees out here. this place has got it. deliciously fatty belly- moist, dense shoulder- perfectly finished ribs, crisped, tender and with give that teases with a little meat still on the bone and plenty fallin off. the gallons of beer are a nice touch. the sides are fairly lackluster, but lets face it- who is goin for the sides? this is great meat.
