Fish Tail Was Phenomenal
By thewiseking on 10/27/2010
A rare treat, a opportunity to go out to lunch on a slow day at the office.Fish Tail is perfectly situated on a nice, tree lined block off Lex in midtown so you choose to go there. You enter a lovely downstairs bar area wth booths but decide to head upstairs where the space opens up into a drop dead gorgeous town house dning room wth flatterng light, and big well spaced tables. Your table in the corner by the front window is perfect ovelooking trees and brownstones. The service is sweet and efficient, drinks are immediately brought and specials explained. We order the Bento Box, a awesome combo of tuna rolls, lobster bisque, tempura style fish and chips, delicious crisp chopped salad and dessert, all for 26 bucks! She had the lobster roll which was chunky, plenty of tail meat, tasty not too mayonaissy wth perfect frites. We split dessert; a hazelnut moose sundae which was super. Finihed with some bubbly rose and the tab with tip about 80 bucks. An outstanding value, especially in midtown and an overall lovely experience.

Fishtail was a fun and enchanting dinner with friends. When we arrived a few minutes late we were asked to sit at the bar...which was fine since we were all thirsty. The bartender was prompt and informative about the drink menu. We waited for about 10 minutes and then moved to the dining room upstairs. It looked like it has two dining rooms and we were seated in the room by the front of the buidling. The decor was fun and whimsical. We all ordered appetizers, entrees and desserts. 3 bottles of wine and everything was perfectly timed and delicious. The server was graceful and attentive. To say the least we had a lovely meal and lovely service. Thank you, Chef Burke! I will be back!

As Winter Restaurant Week in New York City continued, I found myself at David Burke’s Fishtail on the Upper East Side. I had tried David Burkes Townhouse in the past and really liked it, so I was really excited to try his newer restaurant. Fishtail boasts of being part of the sustainable seafood movement where 80% of the seafood they serve is caught through “sustainable fishing measures”. Though there are some overlaps with the menu from David Burke’s Townhouse, Executive Chef Eric Hara has devised an interesting array of seafood delights. Don’t miss their wonderful peanut brittle which can be sampled right as you walk into the restaurant and also the delicious mustard flavored pretzels served in their bar area. This is just a precursor to some of the good things that await you. For pictures and more food details click on this link: http://therestaurantfairy.com/2010/04/16/fishtail-by-david-burke/
Worst Service Ever

Upon arriving we were told that reservations were running 15 minutes behind, to wait by the bar. There was one bartender for the entire restaurant & it took nearly 15 minutes just to get a drink. While waiting, we overheard two different parties complain to the manager that they had waited over 30 minutes already. Once seated, we had to ask for water & bread, which was stale. Despite at least 8 waiters and runners, the managers were clearing tables & running food even after the restaurant had started to clear. By the time we had finished dessert, the restaurant was half empty, our waiter was missing & the manager cleared our plates. We had to request our check from him. The table next to us had empty entree plates for at least 15 minutes before having them cleared. Its Restaurant Week & they were out of 1 of 5 entree choices, leaving 4, 2 of which were an additional cost of $5. As for decor, between the hot pink paint, psychedelic wallpaper & low lighting we nearly went blind by the end of dinner. The bright spot of the entire meal was that they mistakenly did not charge us for our cocktails.

Horrific service, bad and overpriced food. You'd be a sucker to waste your money there!!!
Rude and Unhelpful Front of House

My husband and I were very excited to try this restaurant. Unfortunately they were running almost an hour behind and the hostess didn't seem interested in helping us or answering any questions. Even when we left she didn't even look our way. Luckily we walked around the corner and had a beautiful meal at Park Avenue Winter. We will NEVER go back to Fishtail.
