I adore this place. I love: that the hostess is friendly and wears her hair in a modified beehive, eating escargots to stave off a hangover at 4am, watching all the different customers (club kids, drag queens, i-bankers, fashion editors). Efficient service, rich food, fun atmosphere.

Things that are good: breakfast numbers, fries, and that's it. The vegetarian couscous is a major dissapointment. The other items are pretty much mediocre.

So it's not a truckstop, but it's fun to pretend. The transvestites, the pretty boys, the beautiful girls, the cranky mother and son, make this meatpacking original as people-watchy as the newest thing on the block. At 4pm in a spring downpour we sat watching the deluge outside, secure in our banquette in the diner with our snails swimming in garlic butter, and artichoke with mayonnaise for dipping. Red Rhone wine and perfectly cooked medium rare burgers with crunchy fries made it a perfect afternoon. It's like a lost place when it's empty, and that's when I prefer it. It's packed at night and becomes an animal. The coffee is good. No diner coffee here.

Fun, funky, a French bistro in what looks like a diner

This was one of the pioneers of the now trendy bunch of eateries in the Meatpacking District (far west near 14th St.). Florent must surely have been a coffee shop and, without any renovating, they've turned it into a playful and casual French restaurant, open when you want to eat, affordable, beyond casual. It can get crowded and you're packed in, but they offer a reasonable, price fixed dinner that might include roast chicken, couscous, soup or salad and dessert for the low $20's. Mustardy salad dressings add to the feel of authenticity. It's an original, a restaurant with a sense of humor and deserves recognition.
