worth the trip...

We love this place - true, the full dinner menu is not available yet, but what they do serve is delicious and thoughtfully prepared (from cheese selections, shrimp salad, oysters, etc. and even their cashews and olives are yummy). I can only imagine that their dinner menu will be equally as well done - I also think the service is lovely.

Wow- Rarely have I been to a place that seems more overrated than Fort Defiance. Granted, I just went for brunch, and I am willing to go back to sample the cocktails that I hear so much about, but overcooked eggs, flavorless, fatty ham, red beans that tasted out-of-the-can, and worst of all- a cup of counter-culture coffee that was so sour I had to send it back. I was really surprised. The place has a great vibe, and I hope that this was a fluke- but even the brunch menu seemed far less inspired than most things one could do at home. I can't imagine the hype that the place has received has anything to do with brunch. Skip it.

Amazing any time of day

I've been to Fort Defiance at least a dozen times, and it's consistently delightful. St. John's cocktails are uniformly outstanding, and the atmosphere is welcoming and comfortable (except for when it's too warm -- my only complaint about the place, and in a way, being a little over-heated complements Fort Defiance's slight Southern accent). Highlights from recent trips: - At brunch, the Savannah offers a hangover-busting plate of crispy-spicy fried chicken with sawmill (sausage) gravy, perfectly light and fluffy scrambled eggs, and a couple of little biscuits that are nothing to write home about, honestly, but they'll do for smearing butter and jelly on. Round it out with an order of home fries and a rich, creamy Bourbon Milk Punch. - Monday night's burger-and-beer special (a great value at $12), with a perfectly cooked Pat La Frieda patty that I actually liked better than the blend they use at Shake Shack. - At the bar, pimento cheese and Ritz crackers, just like my mama used to make. Paired with a frosty Tom Collins, this is the antidote to a humid afternoon in Red Hook. - The dinner menu changes weekly, but if they offer the Pat La Frieda hanger steak in any form, get it. I had it with chimichurri sauce awhile back and it was fantastic. The seafood specials are also dependably well-prepared and tasty. Fort Defiance knows what it wants to do, and it does it well. What more could you ask for?

Just ate THE most delicious meal here. From the cocktails to the oysters to the apple pie, it could not have been better. The mackerel was the best fish I've had in new york in years. Happiness.
