Terrible Brunch Experience

My friends and I decided to try Frank this afternoon for brunch. It looked quaint and the menu sounded good, but the entire experience was one of the worst I have ever had in NYC. First, we were unable to get clean glasses of water. After ordering, our food came out looking nothing at all like the menu descriptions. Although the menu said that our meals would include potatoes and toast, we never received these items on our table. The food was truly inedible; my eggs pomodoro was basically two overcooked eggs with canned tomatoes dumped on top of it. When I mentioned this to the host, he deferred to our waiter, saying that he was "not familiar" with the menu. Our waiter told me again and again that we had received toast, etc., but it simply was not true. It seemed ridiculous to argue more at this point, so I voiced my concerns and we left as quickly as we could. I would tell everyone in this city to stay away from Frank, as it will only be a disappointment. It proved to be a huge waste of time, money, and caloric intake.

The food at Frank is really excellent. Last week, I took my girlfriend there on a date, and took my Mom out for dinner there - they both loved it. I really can't say enough good things about the place, it's great.

Concur with a previous blogger, good food, atmo & service but they do manage to include a couple of extra $'s per item which tends to leave an unsavoury flavour in the mouth.
Specials are 40-50% more than menu items, so buyer beware.

Stealing From Customers

First off, you should know that the food here is excellent, and the service is above par.
However, after inspection of my bill, they charged me $1-3 more for EACH item ordered. The menu prices (in house and online) both reflect less than what I was billed for. Not only is this highly illegal, but quite dishonest and unjustified. They claim they are "updating the menu". They wouldn't even let me talk to a manager on the phone. In retrospect - no business should charge more for their dishes without publicity notifying customers of the price increases.
Plus the restaurant only accepts cash, which makes the whole operation all the more worth shady. You are better off going to a restaurant that accepts credit cards.
Do not go here unless you planned to get robbed. There are just as good alternatives in the area.

we've been ordering from frank for an eternity now, but somehow the last few times it's taken way too long - well over an hour for something basic. last time the dude found my apartment, but - somehow not my buzzer (there are two to choose from). so he went back to the restaurant and let the food cool until i called, at which point they redelivered the same stuff. nom nom, congealed fat.
what happened frank! forsaken me, you have!

You're a loon if you've never been to Frank. The East Village dining scene practically revolves around this place. Small and bustling, incredible pastas, and still pretty cheap after all of these years. I live and die over the fennel alla parmigiano. And rigatoni al ragu. Delivery highly recommended as well if you live close by and don't feel like braving the wait for a table.

I feel forced to write this review after reading the negative reviews on this site.
My family and I have had dinner/lunch several times at Franks. The food has always been the best and freshest food. As an Italian American family from RI excellent Italian food is a must. Our favorite items to order the string beans with roasted garlic, spinach gnocchis, and garlic bread. We have never gotten sick ever. The place is spotless, the prices are low, and the staff is friendly.
I cant recommend this place more highly. Please go and enjoy one of the best meals you will ever have.

First things first. Great food, impressive wine list and helpful staff. But speaking of Staph, as my Italian friends say " Don't eat meatballs other than in Grandma's Kitchen." Two of us did, one ended up in the ER and the other sick for 2 days. Called Frank, he did not call back. I still eat there, but no more meatballs. Beware, but enjoy a great funky place.

Great Food Doesn't Make up for Bad Service

The rich Italian food didn't compensate for the terrible service. The host told us the wait would be 15 minutes. In fact, we waited 45 minutes with little explanation. Once we sat, our waitress was nowhere. On top of that, the host spilled water on my companion and then blamed it on a bus boy! If you don't mind being treated rudely, highlights of the food include the Thursday night lasagna special.
My advice: skip Frank and go to Supper (by same owners) around the corner. Food is the same, and service much better.
