This is a fantastic Italian restaurant. The space is charming, the food is fantastic, and the service is great. The downsides are it can take a little while to get seated, and I recently had take out from here which (not surprisingly) paled in comparison to eating in the restaurant. The cavatelli with sausage and prosciutto and pecorino sandwich are not to be missed.

This place is such a diamond in the mess that is Clinton Street. The pasta is to die for, and the menu is authentic while also being versatile in both portion and variety. The wines are always interesting and well chosen. The service is unpretentious and timely, a rarity in our fine city. I love it so much I almost don't want to recommend it, because I wish there would always be a table for me when I arrive! It's small-- too small for kids, great for a date.

I just moved down to the LES and decided to try this place for lunch on a Saturday and ordered the pruscuitto and pecorino sandwich with a Peroni. It was fantastic. The bread, meat, and cheese were all fresh and authentic. I'm craving it right now as I type this. Recommended for lunch and dinner as well if you don't mind waiting outside for a bit. It does get a bit loud, but this lends to the energetic ambience.

A little crowded and tough to get a table at times, but the small space, dim lighting and tin ceilings provide for an intimate experience. It is my favorite restaurant in the city. Luckily, it is right down the street. Great cheese selection. I recommend the Robiola. The house wine is very good and a great value - half-carafe is only $12. The best dish in the place is the cavatelli and sausage in a sage-butter sauce. My wife and I often go to Frankies and get a great meal with wine and cheese for $50. I haven't found a deal like that anywhere else in the city. ps: skip dessert and head across the Clinton Street Baking Co for their chocolate cake. Wow.

It's not perfect but it definitely surpassed my expectations (I've had one too many crappy experiences with pretentious, "hip" scenes on the LES). I appreciate their young and hard working staff; I think it just added to the atmosphere. The portions might be considered small but its certainly quality, not quantity, that they're all about. Love the homey feel (exposed brick, bathroom with external sink, retro black and white tiles on the floor, felt like I was in someones awesomely lit apartment). Wine selection was great and decently priced.

From the amazing olive oil to the great meatballs, Frankies 17 brings the A game the whole meal through. Its a reliable and well priced restaurant. The last time I was there, I saw Sara Moulton, so, that's pretty much all the proof I'd need to be convinced. The salads are substantial and the produce fresh. I'm a sucker for their crostini as well. Fresh ricotta? check. Delicious local honey? Check. Perfectly pressed bread? Double check. The sides, like polenta and farro are hearty and definitely satisfy. They have a good wine list from affordable to splurge-worthy too. The gnocchi are light, but the sauce could be a little less watery. The sandwiches are HUGE and a bit unwieldy, but so flavorful. If you like ricotta, olive oil, good food and happiness - do yourself a favor and go there; bottom line: great food, cozy atmosphere, you'll have a good night.

The ambiance is charming. The food is not. I had the "house-made gnocchi marinara." The gnocchi was unimpressive. It was dense and did not taste homemade at all. The marinara sauce tasted raw, as though it had come straight out of a can. I couldn't finish it. My partner had the meatballs, which were tasty, but rather unsatisfying as an entree. We also sampled two of the cheeses, which were $6 each. This was preposterous as we received literally a tiny slice of each cheese, neither of which had the quality deserving of its price tag. It is romantic, but anyone who knows good Italian will not be impressed enough by the coziness of the place to go back for the food. Disappointing. I wanted to love it!
